I’m not discounting the value of higher ed, nor am I saying that the trades are more noble than work that requires advanced degrees. I do think we should value that work as well. I’m an IT guy, it isn’t like my hands get dirty and I spend most of my day in front of a screen.

There is also a profound shortage of dentists in rural areas. That doesn’t change the lack of other skilled laborers. No plumbers means no construction of housing, factories, hospitals and on and on. Even high tech data centers need cooling systems, which means plumbers.

Yes, there is an absolute shortage of Drs, especially PCPs. (Which is how the AMA wants it since they had congress limit the # of med students who can get aid) Med school is phenomenally expensive and out of reach for many. Both problems are real and need to be addressed.

We have devalued working with one’s hands and pushed degrees on many young people who might be better off in the trades, which is valuable, good work. Please don’t think I’m defending anything about TACOs policies or administration, I despise them. And truly, I like your no-holds-barred attitude.

Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters install and repair piping fixtures and systems.

I don’t know that I can find a single study about plumbers, but the Bureau of Labor Statistics does state over 40,000 openings a year and multiple articles and releases from construction cite a shortage which slows down construction of homes and factories.
