"At least if youโ€™re a fan of a certain age. If you are, like me, someone who never grew out of Doctor Who, because it was taken away before I had the chance."

God, this explains so much. Never thought of it like that before, thank you.

Nice of them to give history documentary makers of the future a visual metaphor to work with

When my kids wrote a song using AI, all I could think was: you missed the fun part | Myke Bartlett The arrival of AI is a chance to remind kids that the joy of creativity is not in what you made, but in the process of making it

I wrote for @australia.theguardian.com about helping kids realise that โ€“ in an age when ChatGPT can generate "art" in a nanosecond โ€“ it's the creative process that matters more than the outcome.

Thanks Rich! I hope so too... at present it feels like schools (particularly primary level) are totally unprepared for AI.

Fantastic article by @mykebartlett.bsky.social. I don't think it was until my university years that I understood fully how the process was the point of learning, and the result was secondary.

I really hope education can quickly catch up here and reframe "process as the point" from a young age.

Listened to this @bigfinish.bsky.social on a long drive with the kids yesterday. The 12yoโ€™s review: โ€œit pulls you in and wonโ€™t let you go.โ€ Mine echoes Mattโ€™s below. Lots of fun.

Listened to all six episodes on a long drive with the kids yesterday โ€“ we all thoroughly enjoyed it! Your (mini) review was spot on. Very 80s fantasy โ€“ if not very 80s Who (although feel 80s Who could have very successfully leaned in this direction).

I will add our kids (10/12) just watched and enjoyed all 7 episodes of Ambassadors of Death, so maybe Iโ€™m being unfair.

I would have too, but Iโ€™m fully aware I was a weird kid. Our kids are weird too, but I think theyโ€™d both find this too static and dark. My platonic version of Who is horror films for kids, which is such a hard balance. Think RTD used to get it just right, most of the time.

I prided myself on being rational and easygoing. Then I started coaching competitive kidsโ€™ sports | Myke Bartlett Coaching has brought me into close and uncomfortable contact with aspects of my own character that had been hitherto concealed โ€“ much like parenting

I will add that it was meant to be self-deprecating and guilt-ridden (written after a semi in which I felt I could have subbed more equitably), but seems to have been read as an argument for ruthlessness. Kids sport โ€“ so fraught!

Oh, now Iโ€™m tempted. BF has been so hit and miss lately I wasnโ€™t sure I could commit funds to two box sets for one story.

The end of Doctor Who | Myke Bartlett | The Critic Magazine Time does weird things as you get older. Just ask Doctor Who. It seems only yesterday (it was 2023) that a returning Russell T Davies was saving the ageing show from ratings oblivion โ€” with the helpโ€ฆ

There is value in art that takes us away from our present moment and its suffocating value system. Good television need not be a manifesto.

On the failings of Disney Who to connect with an audience.

I watched this again a couple of weeks ago. Always think itโ€™s too soon to revisit, always wrong. With each passing year, this and Zygons gain a bit more stature over pretty much all of the rest of Classic Who.

We canโ€™t control what disasters a new year may bring. Stoicism can help us get up and try again | ... Social media can amplify our own helplessness and guilt โ€“ perhaps itโ€™s time to return our focus from the global to the local, where we can truly make a change
