I would say that this policy represents a fundamental misunderstanding of the role of indirect cost, and supporting scientific research in this country. This is the funding that provides the infrastructure in which scientific research is done. Without it the whole enterprise collapses. This represents government’s commitment to the scientific research endeavor designed to promote health. Industry can’t pick up the slack. No one gets their PhD training at the University of Pfizer

The NIH move to cut funding for “indirects” landed a few hours ago and my phone hasn’t stopped buzzing with messages from researchers, scientific leaders and others warning of dire consequences for academia and the biomedical enterprise.
