What if the length of the warranty, 3 years, coincidentally happened to be the amount it would take for the car to depreciate 50% to the price I paid for it? Hahaha

Question is: is the discount enough to outrun depreciation for 3 years?

Could buy a $60,000 car for $32,000, drive it until the warranty expires, then sell it for the same price I paid?

Ok maybe we're getting a little too literal.

It's symbolism. Countries that isolate their markets with protectionist trade measures ultimately end up with stagnant, uncompetitive industries and worse products for their citizens.

It's possible, had the contract between Chrysler-Renault-AMC-Wisconsin-UAW to build the Jeep Grand Cherokee in Kenosha been approved before the Chrysler buyout, AMC would have built a new plant in Kenosha, but we'll never know.

It's sad things ended the way they did, but it is fun to wonder...

It possible the pair could have been profitable into the 1990s, but Renault would have likely grown tired of owning 46.1% of AMC and either would have bought it outright, or sold it.

As for Kenosha, those plants were ancient, and AMC/Renault would have dumped them if they could afforded it.

Things would have certainly been different if Besse had survived. But there's no guarantee that AMC would have survived forever.

The Alliance/Encore models were basically dead, and the upcoming Renault Premiere was a good car, but arriving 2 years late to the market's hottest segment.
