If you’re feeling a bit sad it might help a little to know that this painting exists. It’s called Dynamism of a dog on a leash, by Giacomo Galla, 1912:

It’s baby octopus season πŸ™πŸ¦‘

Saw this little guy last night with the Salish Sea School in Anacortes, WA as part of their free community dock walk I volunteer as an interpreter for.

We can tell it is a giant pacific octopus from the single line of chromatophores on each arm.

An oval-ish shaped stone engraved with Pictish carvings of an eagle and the Pictish Beast

Tillytarmont Pictish stone

This stone was uncovered in the 1970s on a narrow spit of land between the rivers Isla and Deveron, close to where another five carved stones have been found. The symbols on this one are particularly finely carved, being an eagle and a 'Pictish beast'. A small cairn of stones was also found, supporting the idea that this stone may have marked the burial of a powerful person in the 6th or 7th centuries AD.

The Vampyre

John William Polidori, 1819

The character of Lord Ruthven the notorious, charismatic, and seductive vampire - is considered modelled after the poet Lord Byron, by the author who was Byron's physician (it was previously believed that Byron was the author). Unlike later vampires, The Vampyre barely mentions bloodsucking, instead Ruthven wreaks havoc through seduction, acting as a catalyst for his victims to unleash their repressed desires and tendencies.

This opening passage locates the mythology of the vampire in "the general East", reiterating the idea that, although Ruthven is British, the origins of the vampire hail from the East and have travelled West to influence and disrupt society

Frankenstein; or, the modern Prometheus Mary Shelley, 1831 edition (first edition 1818)

Shelley first imagined the idea of Frankenstein while telling ghost stories with other writers. She was pregnant while writing the novel and had lost a baby the year before. After the death of her two-week-old daughter she writes of a recurring dream "that my little baby came to life again; that it had only been cold, and that we rubbed it before the fire, and it lived." Shelley writes of creation of life without woman or pregnancy, the creature innocent and loving, only becoming monstrous when exposed to fear and rejection by hit his own "father".

I see the Christmas village is in full swing 😩

I don't like the village because of the blaring music, the flashing lights, and especially because it closes the main bus route into town. As half of Union Street is also blocked off, trying to find a bus stop requires a degree in polar exploration

Fascinating world of ancient #glass ! A small-scale but colourful mosaic glass inlay depicting an Ibis. This inlay, originating from a workshop in Roman-era Egypt, was discovered in Tawern, near Trier, Germany.
The ibis was considered a sacred animal of Thoth, the Egyptian deity...🧡1/2

My photo shows the β€˜Mold Cape’ on an upright metal stand inside a British Museum display case. It is a Bronze Age object made of thin hammered gold. The sheet gold is curved and looks like a stiff, rounded poncho. The surface is densely decorated with rows of repeating patterns made of circular bosses and lozenges, which run horizontally around the cape. These are thought to imitate strings of beads. The gold is a deep, warm colour which shines in the display lighting. Cracks and repaired sections are visible. The Mold Cape would be worn over the chest and shoulders. Arm movement would be restricted due to the rigidity of the gold. This amazing artefact was discovered in 1833 by workmen digging for stone in a burial mound at Bryn yr Ellyllon, (Hill of the Goblins) near Mold in Flintshire.

From Bronze Age Wales, the spectacular Mold Cape! 🀩

An incredible ancient feat of sheet-goldworking, beaten from a single gold ingot some 3,600 years ago!

The extraordinary embossed decoration is said to mimic strings of beads.
