I just wanted to describe how the costume changes reflect the story. From the fighting outfit that conceals but allows some vulnerability to peek thru, to the vulnerability of being bare chested but uncertain, to the white softness of the freedom outfit. It’s all intentional.

Thank you for reading my thoughts. I know there’s so much I missed but it’s so hard when Jimin is such a genius and there are so many interwoven elements. I have so much more to say about this video. It is an absolute MASTERPIECE!

I just think the parallels are fascinating. We have Jimin vanquishing his inner demons and the shadows and pressures of the outside world in all black before rising, freed in white. This may be a stretch but it just came to mind.

It is said that when Jesus died, the sun was blackened and darkness shrouded the world. When the Marys went to the tomb on the third day, an angel in dazzling white clothes appeared and told them Jesus had risen.

also really gives a Resurrection of Christ vibe. In Christian myth Christ died to vanquish our sins and open heaven to us once again. To free us from original sin and eternal death and suffering.

The shadow is literally slain (think of the fallen dancers). He remains victorious. The soft whiteness of the outfit combined with the imagery of the Rilke poem, the spiritual quality of the song, and the image of him rising from the dancers

He wears white to symbolize that the shadow has been defeated. He is starting over. He has arrived. Pure and fresh and soft. No need for leather and combat boots. The uncertainty is gone. He is soft and vulnerable and himself. He is free.

Everything about this outfit is different. It is white. It is soft. A soft sheer sweater, white dress pants. Soft shoes. His exposed moon tattoo. This outfit very clearly symbolizes that he is free. This is the freedom outfit.

He’s not scared anymore. The jacket falls open. The camera pans out. The dancers clamber to get a touch of him before they fall to the ground. Jimin rises alone from the sea of “de@d” dancers. Here we have the third and final costume change.

The dancers circle around him. He’s the center of attention. Exposed and strong. In the climactic moment, the music swells, the dancers close in, and they lift Jimin above them. He reaches out, torso and wrist fully exposed. This is it, he’s being freed.

His chest remains exposed. He continues to lay himself bare. He continues to set himself free. As the dancers perform a movement that looks like bowing, Jimin again begins the repeating cries of “set me free.”
