Working on a conference paper draft, and I had to dive into Notion for something I wrote in grad school. My goodness—the whole thing is just AI this and AI that. Gross.

If I see one more person say, “We have to teach our students how to use AI because they’ll need those *skills* when they get a job.” Girl. There’s not going to be jobs for the students.

Man, I'm sorry, but reading all these AI generated essays from students, it just sucks all the joy out of everything. It's exhausting, makes you into a weird paranoid cop, grinds you down, wastes your time, makes you feel like shit about everything.

Fuck this shit technology and all its enablers.

AI is not, as techno-libertarians would like you to believe, an act of God to which society must adapt. It’s an experiment a very small band of very rich people decided to work upon the rest of us. And they have their reasons. Let’s not pretend otherwise.

Right! And then we just send our chat bots to the meeting for us to talk about the survey results 🙃

And I know this because I had to manually go in and generate the Google Sheets from the Google Survey. WHAT ARE WE DOING.

Serving on an AI Ad Hoc committee in my department, and tell me why someone used AI to sort through faculty responses from a survey we sent out. I don't think anyone actually looked at what faculty had written beyond what was summarized by the AI.

AI ‘Workslop’ Is Killing Productivity and Making Workers Miserable AI slop is taking over workplaces. Workers said that they thought of their colleagues who filed low-quality AI work as "less creative, capable, and reliable than they did before receiving the output."

What makes my head spin is the rush amongst university leadership to integrate AI into everything (and create whole degrees in AI)—all predicated on the idea that students need to be ready for AI in the workplace, when it's all just... this.

(I‘m not a fan of clunky word processors, and as much as I like the utility of Scrivener, it has SO many buttons and whatnot 😵‍💫)

To my surprise, I impressed a data science major who minors in my department by telling them I write everything in Markdown and know it by heart at this point. 🤓

This is the political project every AI booster in higher education is facilitating

A*** M**** fully worked with OpenAI in the past and quickly carved out a normalizing current wherein people ask themselves, “But is it maybe OK to feed a student paper to this AI? Is it OK to not disclose that I used AI to co-write this paper?”

I see these posts, and I’m just taken aback by the celebration they receive. That anyone would find meaningful pedagogy by working with AI peddlers from Ed Tech (itself numerous solutions to problems that don’t exist) just blows me away.

Not to be too shady, but what are we doing when someone’s work as a professor of rhetoric and composition with AI and writing involves bringing in a bunch of ed tech people into their classroom (which, personally, leaves me incredibly suspicious) AND collaborating with people funded by OpenAI?

I considered writing a long carefully constructed argument laying out the harms and limitations of AI, but instead I wrote about being a hater. Only humans can be haters.

"Assistant Director of AI and Education." What a joke. Lol. Lmao.

This is a very writing studies-centered skeet, but… the way that some in the field are tying themselves into knots to advocate for some “ethical uses” of GenAI really emphasizes the field’s shallow investment in anything like “justice” or “decolonization” or “abolition.”

Student commented that my class "definitely shaped the way I view the world now." That's all I can hope for in the Current Moment tbh. 🥹

Finally got around to seeing my annual review from this past academic year, and I got a "Exceeds Expectations" for research, teaching, and service. 😎

It's always a weird moment to actively hear your work being erased in real time with claims that, "Nobody's really talking about this," when I already published on this.

Academic friends who have served on hiring committees: how did y'all report / list that service work on your CV? I have a subsection dedicated to service to my department already, but I'm not sure how I might go about detailing the work (it was a large cluster hire with 10 campus visits 🫨)

No shade, but how do we spend an hour talking about AI and writing pedagogy and not talk about the environmental calculus of tech expansionism? #cwcon
