Screenshot of a tweet from Joyce Carol Oates posted on Sunday, November 9th that reads "so curious that such a wealthy man never posts anything that indicates that he enjoys or is even aware of what virtually everyone appreciates--scenes from nature, pet dog or cat, praise for a movie, music, a book (but doubt that he reads); pride in a friend's or relative's accomplishment; condolences for someone who has died; pleasure in sports, acclaim for a favorite team; references to history. in fact he seems totally uneducated, uncultured. the poorest persons on Twitter may have access to more beauty & meaning in life than the "most wealthy person in the world."
Found the tweet that Joyce Carol Oates bodied Elon Musk with and it's so beautiful in its eloquent, simple take down. So much so he's crashing out trying to prove he reads books now. Put this in the Louvre.

Last year was the first time I had missed a Covid vaccine. I didn't want to get it at the same time as the flu shot. Later I asked the Dr. for it, and she recommended waiting for the updated one. Since then I have had Covid twice. I am on week three this time. Please get your shots ASAP.

E.P.A. Suspends 144 Employees After They Signed a Letter Criticizing Trump
Completely unacceptable that EPA put on leave their employees who spoke up in defense of their agency's mission to protect public health. EPA officials are demonstrating their unwillingness to even engage with their own staff. www.nytimes.com/2025/07/03/c...

This Fourth of July, I am thinking about the 139 civil servants who took an oath to uphold the constitution and the EPAβs mission, and were placed on leave for raising concerns about issues such as deregulating asbestos and lead exposure.
This is un-American. The 1st amendment exists for a reason.

πΊπΈ This Independence Day, letβs remind ourselves:
The roots of modern American civilization began with the seeds of protests & speaking out against a tyrannical regime.
The Boston Tea Party? a protest. The Declaration of Independence? A list of grievances.

"This Fourth of July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn. To drag a man in fetters into the grand illuminated temple of liberty, and call upon him to join you in joyous anthems, were inhuman mockery and sacrilegious irony."

(This Is especially pertinent given the ways in which this administration, and many Democrats, will ask that we put aside our differences and rejoice in the celebration of our Americaness. In our current time, as in Douglass', this is a mockery of all those oppressed by the work of this Empire.)

Explore the speech "What, To The Slave, Is The Fourth Of July" delivered by Frederick Douglass in 1852, including full text and historical context.
Every 4th of July, I take the time to read "What, to the Slave, is the Fourth of July." Let us begin:
"I say it with a sad sense of the disparity between us. I am not included within the pale of this glorious anniversary! Your high independence only reveals the immeasurable distance between us."
