Hip hop helped me leave my mundane hometown life and look to explore. It showed me things are not what they seem and you do not have to settle for a life thrust upon you. There are people and places out there beyond your comprehension if you slow down and listen to their story. I’m grateful.

In 1987, “I Ain’t No Joke” changed music holistically for me. I learned about the consciousness of the narrative, and dancing morphed to mostly listening to the stories of lives and loves, struggles and triumphs. Rakim’s cadence and flow seemed like he was sharing his life with just me.
