Some incredible stories, and an interesting discussion around VC vs. GC, definition of โIn the face of the enemyโ for military personnel. Iโd say Arthur Banks is another example of that slightly grey area:

The headlines behind the frontlines: NOTW pod, hosted by Andy and Merryn. We take a look at the stories being read by the public during the war. 6 random dates every year of the war. https://linktr.ee/NewsOfTheWar

Thanks, Jamie!
13.02.2026 18:46 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0This GC blew me away. I cannot fathom the selflessness of Rev Herbert Pugh, who went down with the ship HMT Anselm.
An interesting aside, Anselm was sunk by U96, made famous by Lothar-Gรผnther Buchheim, author of Das Boot. Buchheim joined the boat a few months after Anselm.

๐จ... aaand Malta, of course. The only collective GC awarded during WWII, not without controversy. Read all about it - hear all about it - in this week's #NewsoftheWar.

At this point, in this week's #NewsoftheWar special, if you don't have something in your eye ...
Whatever else is happening, it's the actions of men like Rev Herbert Pugh that give us a reality check. This. THIS, is courage
You have to listen to #NewsoftheWar.
Some news is totally unexpected.
On the home front, men and women weren't duty bound to fight forwards - but they did. In this week's #NewoftheWar special, we hear about Albert Ernest Dolphin ~ deliberately putting himself in danger to save someone else.

Acts of courage knew no bounds, but the award of the George Cross was a qualified process. The only George Cross recipient to have survived Japanese captivity, Durrani was one of the first George Cross Committee members of the Victoria Cross and George Cross Association.
13.02.2026 09:00 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0The George Cross carries with it a peculiar criteria ~ not in the presence of an enemy ~ but that doesn't mean men un uniform weren't worthy of its award (we don't say 'win', it wasn't a race). AB Colin Grazier GC.

Szabo is well known now, but many names are unknown to us *unless* we're looking at #NewsoftheWar. Private Benjamin Hardy GC, for his courage at No. 12 Prisoner of War Camp, Cowra. Outstanding gallantry, incredible courage.
Spoiler.: You'll need your handkerchiefs this week.
It's not all doom and gloom in this week's #NewsoftheWar, it just feels like it. These were different times, and different news carried different views. Case in point - Violette Szabo, GC - posthumously awarded the George Cross.
13.02.2026 09:00 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0๐จ SPECIAL: In this week's #NewsoftheWar, it's the George Cross. Never before, was so much bravery and heroism packed into six columns wide.
Grab your hankies ... the King awaits ...

Join @merrynwalters.uk and @andyaitch.bsky.social this Friday for the News of The War George Cross special.
Often overlooked compared to stories of the Victoria Cross, we dive into the tales of astonishing heroism of the people that were awarded the GC in the SWW

Hello. Some of you may have been on the WHW livestream last night and heard Al talking about our podcast @newsofthewar.bsky.social
We try not to hang off others coattails but, well they brought it up! (weโre overwhelmed by the kindness)

07.02.2026 11:29 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Nice little video of Eisenhower and his 2IC Arthur Tedder, along with Monty in Normandy, early June 44.
Weโre assuming this is before Tedder grew to hate Monty ๐คจ

A packed pod. From duelling Montys to a sad moment of reflection, itโs all there. @merrynwalters.uk and @andyaitch.bsky.social put together a good way to end the week.

One small article, a postcard home, the hopes and prayers of a family in Leicester and the unrelenting tragedy of the Second World War.

IWM (JFU 332) Kranji POW camp.
And a 'Dear Janet' letter that will make you cry.
It's all in the #NewsoftheWar ...
Something not to be laughed at:

He's back. He was, technically, our cartoon of the day - even though his points, made here, were anything but funny. A masterclass in combined operations' theory:
06.02.2026 09:24 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0And while most can find Italy on the warmaps now, there's a bit of a debate about map of the week. This, believe it or not, is larger than the original. 1.5 inches wide, but full of insight if you were reading the #NewsoftheWar.
06.02.2026 09:24 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0... is this just the best picture of a PIAT, 1939 - 1945? It's mentioned in #NewsoftheWar, it's from Ortona: Private Edmund Arsenault of The West Nova Scotia Regiment aiming a PIAT anti-tank weapon from a slit trench near Ortona, Italy.
06.02.2026 09:24 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0It's December 1943 - Montgomery's busy, and the Canadians doubly so. Which, happily, leads us to some of the best news so far in this war - the Germans have run away - and ...
06.02.2026 09:24 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0But impressions do matter. Here's one. It in no way makes up for the rather good, and rather awful impressions of Montgomery in this week's episode of #NOTW. Sorry about that.
06.02.2026 09:24 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Anyway. Movin' on. It's peculiar how, in the news, we formed so many different impressions of the men fighting for our liberty. Tedder, for one. Would *you* have referred to this man as - a gremlin?! It's all in the #NewsoftheWar, folks:
