Lots of people surprised by Rees-Mogg’s involvement in this piece but he has always had a very consistent view on the rights afforded by British citizenship and he’s been outspoken on the Shamima Begum case several times. He’s often wrong about things, but on this he’s absolutely right.

Summary *This evidence addresses the committee’s questions about the competitiveness of House of Commons elections, and the clarity of voting systems used in those elections. *There is no clear trend toward select committee chair elections becoming more competitive since 2010. This makes it unlikely that greater competitiveness was the cause of last year’s apparent increase in chair candidates’ campaigning efforts. *The voting systems used to elect the Speaker, Deputy Speakers, and select committee chairs are clear, in the sense of operating under precisely explained rules. Those systems also have an important underlying rationale – ensuring election winners have broad support that reflects the diversity of opinion within the House – which might be undermined by some recent proposals for altering the operation of Deputy Speaker elections. *There are serious concerns about clarity in the election of select committee members.

This is important. Targeting of the judiciary is a dangerous populist tactic. The only relevant question is: was the judgment legally sound? If not it will be struck down on appeal. Yesterday in parliament open.substack.com/pub/rozenber...

We can’t even *convict* foreign criminals. Nor homegrown ones.

Because - and I know ministers like to pretend this isn’t true, but we will keep saying it - the criminal justice system is in absolute meltdown.

So maybe address that before making little league tables of which foreign is the baddest.
