I legit committed to @ninetenpub.bsky.social's biggest (by 2x) print run ever based on 1 viral IG post about the book, 1 email from a massive knitting business that resulted in 80 pre-orders in a day, and like 5 days of pacing and muttering and deciding to trust my gut.

Still thinking about Heated Rivalry as a huge publishing story. I cannot stop. I'd ask for someone to send help, but this whole thing is really just giving me life, tbh.

To be explicit, the reason "going viral" isn't the key is that it takes far fewer than millions of likes to make a concept viable. Especially in publishing, obviously, where budgets are a tiny fraction of what films require.

Not mentioned explicitly in this coverage, though it's implied: scaling.

To be clear, this is directly relevant to publishing in Canada. And it is the only way to publish as a startup press that doesn't qualify for grants and won't for a long time. Also, IT. IS. GOOD. BUSINESS. Which is something that seems decidedly lacking in what we assume about our culture sector.

Fun fact: This is our most DIY book to date. I'd planned to commission a graphic designer to replace the cover I'd put together as a placeholder, but then the viral stuff happened, pre-orders were through the roof, and so the DIYed cover stayed. I laid the interior out myself.

There's also some very special magic happening around this book. Social media posts about it have gone viral. I've fielded more emails about it than I have about any of our other books. People just WANT IT, and it's amazing to experience.
