It is baffling that ShipStation STILL WILL NOT LET ME GIVE THEM MY MONEY. It's such a good, stable, robust platform, and now I am having to work around it. Which is taking TIME, which I have in excruciatingly short supply. All because it's not possible to give ShipStation my money 🙄

Something I absolutely needed this week we have a new book coming out is for my shipping platform to not let me upgrade my plan as I've maxed out the number of shipments of the original plan. Why is it so hard to give them my money? Apologies, pre-orderers. I'm trying!

Is there one most-challenging aspect of operating a small press by myself? Yes, it is shipping. This year I feel like I've spent more time sorting shipping, navigating tariffs and CUSMA, making delivery contingency plans than I've spent making books. It's the one thing I sometimes hate about my job.

And I gotta say: HUGE LOVE to our readers, who have been patient and supportive as the books they've waited a long time for have been further delayed or shipped with less confidence than usual.

Release of each of our three 2025 books has coincided with major shipping disruption. In February, QUILTING came in with the announcement of tariffs. In June, THE TRUE COST OF WOOL came in as we braced for a postal strike. Now, THE MAGIC OF POCKETS will ship during a postal strike. It is A LOT.

Canadian small business folks: ChitChats is now offering CUSMA-compliance pre-clearance working with their customs brokers. Books are exempt from tariffs, but ours are also printed and bound in Canada on paper made in Canada or the U.S. I'm covering all my bases during this absolutely batshit time.

... the author, the book designer, the craft consultants, the copyeditor, the indexer, the proofreader, and, finally, the publisher.

The people costs of the book come in over time, spread out over months, which makes it less daunting for our startup press to manage...

We don't have a stretch goal! Every dollar raised from here on will help to cover the remaining half of the cost of A USER'S GUIDE TO YARN, which is the people cost. Printing is about half the budget, and the rest is all of the professionals who, together, create the contents of the book:
