11.06.2024 05:24 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0before recording the trailer, I decided to completely rework the movement from the ground up.
my goal was to make it feel more dynamic and to allow players to land on the floating platforms in the level, which was impossible before.
here were the results :D

I then added a score screen for the end of the game.
I might want to expand upon this to include a leaderboard, so players could compete locally. based on my experience with typewriter it could make the game more engaging and fun.

Sunspot Formula
Spawn Frequency Formula
this is wild but, last week I realized I could use desmos to come up with formulas for animations and events.
on the left is a formula I used for setting the size of the sunspot when an enemy appears. on the right is the formula I used for enemy spawn frequencies during each wave.

decided to push myself quite a bit for the modeling!
a good sketch reference and a bit of playing around with a uv sphere did the trick. although honestly I would have loved to meet and collaborate with modelers. will definitely reach out more in the future.

what yeeted me to oblivion was this warping movement thing that I worked on during day 4. this looked awesome, but wasn't super playable, as the FOV would completely warp the player's perception.
might be good in a different movement-based game tho! #smallgamestudio

on day 3 I experimented with lighting and post-processing effects. originally I went for this purple look, and I stuck with it for a while.
somehow I managed to yeet myself into oblivion in the process #smallgamestudio

wrote a script on day 2 to generate many floating platforms when the player presses space. also added a health bar and stand-in assets for a bullet bill-style enemy that rushes at you-

results from the end of day 1! I got a basic grapple controller to work.

started off simple last week with a few platforms in Unity. I managed to get them to attract to each other, and also gave camera manipulation a go #smallgamestudio

25.05.2024 05:58 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0thanks Jaylynn! honestly, I might give bunny game a go when the class is over as ik ppl wanted it too :0
25.05.2024 05:56 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0#smallgamestudio the first step was figuring out how physics would play into the game. I followed a Brackeys tutorial and worked on a script that simulates gravity. this ended up working well.
the video also taught how to use static variables to help reduce lag in the game, neato.
I agree! tried both ideas in Unity and the void game caught on right away. it was a lot easier to get in and start experimenting with the features.
thank you for the feedback 🤙
#smallgamestudio moodboards for my top ideas! slinger seems better for a short-term project, so I've decided on that one. I'll leave the cozy stuff to my classmates hehe.
I'll definitely want to create the bunny game in the future tho... maybe my next project, afterward? mayhaps?
#smallgamestudio these are three of the elevator pitches I curated this spring for the game dev course. it's pretty cool to see the votes when the pitches are over.
I ended up getting torn between the void game and the bunny game... so I'll have to pick...
(sorry for spam btw! playing catch up)
here is my lil' creation from last week, a game called flowstate, with a bit of office theming and ambient sound.
press any key to jump and down arrow key to fast fall!

some workflow for an abstract #smallgamestudio game last week! I tried to improve how I organized my scripts and prefabs.
I juiced up the game by adding particle prefabs and spawning them on the player when they perform actions such as jumping. I coupled this with music, SFX, and camera shaking.
these #smallgamestudio games were inspiration pieces I played a while back.
my favorites were Loneliness and A Space Between worlds, both short but gut-wrenching experiences about everyday life. Flower Game was hypnotic, and the most visually striking.
#smallgamestudio "A Short Hike" is my favorite of Robinson-Yu's games. I finished the game in about two hours and I have yet to try the mods. I wish it was longer tbh :0

this game from Robinson-Yu is called "Dank Mountain." it's a precursor to one of his more popular games. it's about hiking up a mountain, then paragliding off! I found the paragliding bit really rewarding and fun.

hey #smallgamestudio! last week I ended up finding some games from Canadian designer Adam Robinson-Yu and wanted to show off the first game I played, "Dog Surfing." I love the many hamburgers sprinkled around the game.

here's a continuation of #smallgamestudio games I've been playing, mostly text-based. some are very informative while others are downright hilarious. the typewriter-esque interface of "barnacle goose experiment" really stood out to me and gave inspiration for the style of my typewriter game.
