Hard Target is a movie by John Woo, a man who in a perfect world would be a world-famous, top-of-the-line director of photography. Sadly, we do not live in a perfect world, but in a world shaped by the resurgence of fascism first in post-Soviet Eastern Europe, and then seeping into every other part of the world, a fact this movie keeps bringing up in kind of a protest-too-much matter. And in this world, John Woo is allowed to have contact with scripts and actors, to the benefit of no one, least of all himself. If the theme of Bloodsport is homosociality, the theme of Hard Target is straightforward homosexuality. This is a movie about men who want to have sex with other men via the medium of weaponry rather than their penises. Men touch other men with their guns, caress their guns sensually as they chase other men, pay top dollar to cruise for other men to shoot with their guns, stick guns and grenades in each others faces and crotches. This is the most in-the-closet movie I have seen in my life. Usually when a movie is this much about being gay, Tim Curry comes out with a song about wanting to fuck Charles Atlas at some point. That would've been too interesting for Hard Target, though."
