Even Holmes and Watson - the ultimate "enigmatic etc." - are variations on a template rather than a wholly original creation. I always judge them by their Watsons, by the way - they should be "grounded" if conventional thinkers, rather than embarrassingly dim.

There's bound to be some good charity shops near you that take books seriously - Oxfam do, the Children's Society do, and so may some of the smaller local charities. Generally speaking, if the book is falling apart, just recycle it, but otherwise all donations are usually well received.
