The best film version of Frankenstein is the book with really good illustrations.

I realized why this article bothers me. It's because it narrows being a devote Christian narrowly to ideas around sex which is an inherently conservative definition of Christianity. Talarico says his Christianity is what compels him to care about the poor.

I can't imagine what it must be like to have never seen a Frankenstein movie and having Del Toro's be your first.

Hah yes this.

Some of the books I loved as a teen have really not held up, while others did and are clearly excellent.

But there were books I was also just not ready to read, and my opinions on them were a waste of space.

World: “This fellow is deathly pale!”
Ireland: “Hey, check out the tan on yer man!”

But that's like 8 pages out of 100s. The rest is pretty neat Euro-fantasy with a grotty folk-weird fairy tale vibe that really deserves to find an audience beyond older nerds like me chasing nostalgia.

It's stuff like this and similar pages on mushrooms and booze that probably made someone put "May not be suitable for children" on the back cover. Which is a shame. Dolmenwood is pure older sibling running games for younger sibling material.

My copy of Dolmenwood arrived and it's triggering thoughts. I'll maybe share some later, but the primary one is that this is an enchanting book. Literally.

Flipping through the pages is like rediscovering a lost world of wonder you could more easily access sometime back around middle school.

Yeah, IIRC it's near the end.

I read about it in a Sarah Vowel book... Assassination Vacation, I think.
