The issue that was supposed to print this week contained criticism of the Whitten regime and IUs further slide into scist control, and they couldn't allow that to happen during Homecoming, when all the rich alumni are in town. Enter Purdue! The Purdue student paper, The Exponent, owns its own presses. Yesterday, in an act of tremendous solidarity with their biggest rival school, they printed the forbidden issue of the IDS. They then drove it to Bloomington overnight and stocked all of the IDS boxes on campus, just in time for Homecoming. Solidarity is what makes us stronger, and solidarity will be what ultimately allows us to triumph, if we can ever truly get it together. I hope everyone has a fun, safe day if they're going out today, and I hope we can think about what acts of solidarity we can begin taking to really make this movement MOVE - beyond a permitted expression of upset into more active resistance. 75 12 comments

The problem is not as simple as a single variable. One of those problems is an aggressively myopic focus on short-term gains.

The tech companies aren’t ignoring profitability so much as the speculative investors are propping them up.

It’s all about overvaluation. In a quarterly basis.

We can agree to disagree to disagree on all that but I respect yall and hope we can find a better system (and government) soon.

Honestly, though.

“Must make price higher by any means” is going to drive unethical business practices, to say nothing of the pressures it puts on society.

We haven’t seen a minimum wage increase in how long? That has a correlation to things like this.

What behavior: The obsession with a stock price?

If we focused less on quarterly earnings we might see more ethical business.

As it stands, it’s a race to cut corners on the name of year-over-year growth.

Again: I am FAR from a Trump booster. Quite the opposite, actually. I am simply saying quarterly earnings reports are a scourge on society. They have nothing to do with transparency. It’s about inflating a stock price. This would actually shut the shareholders up just a tad.

I didn’t think we were talking about any cures. All I’m saying is: Wall Street’s quarterly earnings reports are unhealthily myopic. Perpetual growth is an impossible fiction and the sooner our business leaders realize that, the better.

You speak with such certainty. I think it would impact a lot of things if there were deeper focus on quality products and services vs perpetually trying to beat where the stock price was three months ago.
