My heart aches.

A lot of my parishioners are asking me, what can we do now? The federal government seems out of control -- we do what generations did before us -- we act locally -- we take care of those in our immediate vicinity -- we stand up for the Good News.

What is USAID, the government agency targeted by Trump and Elon Musk? Elon Musk called USAID a criminal organization that should “die.” Proponents say it’s a key arm of U.S. influence that, if destroyed, “cannot be easily rebuilt.”

So, USAID appears to be gone. My husband devoted more than 30 years of his life to that institution -- to helping the poor in other countries. Is this who we really want to be? For more info on USAID, read here:

Last year, my husband made the tough decision to retire and come to the Midwest & live with his priest wife. He loved his job. He loved helping the poor & oppressed in other countries. Today, we both looked at each other & are grateful he made the bold leap to live in Central Wisconsin.

This is despicable -- does no one have any guts to stand up for what is right?

It is the third day of
Roiling stomach and
Muscles that whine.
The awareness of my body
Is not fun.
Canceled meetings, typed out apologies, darkened church.
Dogs hover, cats perplexed.
Pray has become simplified and brief.
I am here, God.

The silence of the church
allows me to breathe.
No chatter, no chairs scraping the wood
in Fellowship Hall
Just the wind that follows snow
smacking my window.
The sermon beckons.
The class for Advent waves its arms.
Thanksgiving is next week.
How did that happen?
