Obesity increases the risk of Alzheimerβs disease, yet it remained unclear whether #obesity causes #neurodegeneration through the same mechanisms. A new study by Filip Morys in the lab of Alain Dagher used #OpenScience brain data to find the answer.

To determine distinct learning and decision-making profiles in obesity and binge eating (BE), we combined ecological momentary assessment (EMA) in a large online sample with a neuroimaging study. The figure shows the elements of the paper.
Binge eating (BE) is associated with reduced but more variable reward sensitivity. The panels show associations of BE with learning parameters and an fMRI-based reward sensitivity measure derived from the cue stage of an effort task (independent of learning).
Our big behavioral precision mapping preprint is out. Based on 1,486,950 observed choices in a reward learning task, we show that BMI is associated with higher and more variable learning rates. Binge eating was associated with lower reward sensitivity. #neuroskyence π©Ί

New research from The Neuro shows that eating lots of ultra-processed foods is linked not just to obesity, but to changes in brain structure related to appetite and metabolism. These brain effects may help explain why these foods drive overeating.

We tried doing this but in a reduced (non MRI) sample for MR analysis. Might be interesting to redo it for the full sample! Iβll get back to you!
08.04.2025 18:47 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This is a cross-sectional study, but could depict a vicious cycle, where UPF consumption affects the brain leading to even more UPF consumption.
It also shows that UPF acts on the body not only through increases in adiposity.
Happy to discuss! π€

New paper! In ~30k people from UKBB we show that ultra-processed food consumption π is associated with structural integrity of feeding-related brain regions (Hpth/NAcc) π§ Some of the changes occur independent of obesity, through inflammation. www.nature.com/articles/s44... @alaindagher.bsky.social

Both adiposity and genetic risk are associated with brain atrophy in adulthood, but effects appear independent. www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1...
