Standing high atop the Blue Ridge, looking down thousands of feet below to a deep gap in the ridge where a two-lane highway crosses the crest and crosses under Skyline Drive. There are ramps and park entrance stations where drivers on the highway can enter the park and get on Skyline Drive heading north or south. The only other building in sight is a large restaurant on the highway just past the junction. Past the gap, the main crest of the Blue Ridge gently ascends to our right and a pair of lofty outlying ridges span the horizon. Beyond them, sky and earth dissolve together in one bright gray hazy void.
