MST does all the classic stuff of elves, swords and scullery boys with a destiny but *well written*, which is all I ever wanted from 80s-90s fantasy and never got. Deserves the Wheel of Time slot a hundred times over.

He was one of the first in fantasy to clearly make many human nobles evil. George Martin was impressed by MST and openly cited it as an influence for ASoIaF. He even urged Williams to finish the MST series because he was impatient to read the conclusion :D

I'm reading Tad Williams' The Last King of Osten Ard series, which he's writing roughly 30 years after his famous Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series. The original books are great, fairly luminous 1980s epic fantasy with great writing. The new ones are way darker and complex and I'm also enjoying them.
