It was a trip watching Rpri realize in real time that she was going to be kinda famous soon.

SLICE was great. They've really done a lot with it the last few years. It was amazing watching Rori in the spotlight, she shines so brightly in it. Reconnected with faces I've missed, and I got to be a big sloppy insufferable wife guy all weekend, which is my anti-drug (but also drugs.)

I am genuinely having a hard time coping with success. Yeh, I know my old friends think I should shut the fuck up about it and just be grateful but I've spent most of the day crying and not out of joy.

You might want to tweak your search filters there, guy, not those Warriors.

It does turn out that Warriors fans are honestly pretty great, sweet, and welcoming. I was worried, I've never written for a fandom before, and some of them are horrible. I hope they still like me when they read it.

I feel like I need to explain that this is all a big misunderstanding. They meant Rori.

Two teen girls hiking through a forest. In front of them are bushes and shrubs. behind them is a clearing surrounded by large redwoods and a run down shack. There's a shadowy cyclops looking at them from behind the shack, The girls are unaware of the shadowy presence watching them, and look excited and happy to be starting their hike.

A bored middle school girl sits on her bed while Death pontificates about something behind her. She's not listening, she's dreaming of being anywhere else. She has on a dark red tee and jeans. Her bed spread is dark purple with gray gridded stripes, and her walls are covered in goth-y posters. Death's scythe rests against the wall and he's in a hoodie. They're comfortable. You can't expect them to spend eternity in musty old robes.

A starter pack illustration featuring a harried woman with pale skin and long curly hair bursting out of her plastic bubble shouting "OMG! Who puts people in plastic?!" Around her are other bubbles featuring a star trek com badge, her at a jeopardy desk (for unnecessary knowledge), a hockey puck, a tea pot and percolator for caffeine, a watering can for gardening, a very surprised Oak Titmouse for birds, a sleeping gray tabby and a mischievous looking black/brown tabby with white paws and chest for cats, and a bubble that says "AND MORE!" The text at the bottom says "Warning: contains small parts. Do not feed after midnight."

A five panel comic showing an anthropometric onion, dressed in blue robes and blue wizard hat out for a walk when he hears a crack in the bushes and startles to a stop. He looks around, worried. He is being watched by a hooded figure in the bushes. They jump out, surprising him. It's a girl with long, curly red hair, a red dress, and a red cloak. She screams his name "GILLY!" and then grabs him and shakes him while shouting "Can you help me?"
She's fine, she's just melodramatic.

When I was a child there was a local baseball team that played an exhibition circuit and their schtick was they wore dresses. Full beards, cis dudes, no drag, their uniforms were just dresses, and then they played baseball real fast.

Kitab - Not Really Anything

1.
[I lean on the sink and look at my reflection.]
In my youth, people often told me I had so much potential to become somebody.
Like a famous artist or something.
But I have never been able to live up to this potential.
Now, decades later, I understand why.
For a while I thought it was Borderline Personality Disorder.
But I found out what it actually is.

2.
[I hold my fists up. Above each is a figure: the ADHD Creature and the Autism Creature.]
It turns out one can be ADHD and autistic at the same time.
That's a hard-hitting one-two punch that makes everything I try to do much more difficult and frustrating.

3.
[Behind me are some folks. Two are chatting. Another two are flirting. I cannot tell the difference.]
It's why I don't understand how people work.
For example, I always misinterpret social cues.

4.
[Around me are examples of hobbies and projects I've abandoned or left unfinished. I look very sad/frustrated.]
Vintage computers; making videos for my YouTube channel; belly dance (and dance in general); my graphic novel; my homebuilt electronic wind instrument (and music-making in general); volleyball (specifically sand court)
It's why I abandon hobbies and never finish what few projects my executive dysfunction actually allows me to start.

5.
[I cry out in anguish as the tag on my tee shirt drives me insane.]
It's why I sometimes lose my shit over something completely trivial.
Like an itchy tag irritating the back of my neck.

6.
[Finger guns to my reflection.]
I am AuDHD. It's not a bug. It's a feature.
Which is fine, I guess. I'd definitely rather be autistic than borderline.

7.
[I glare over my shoulder into the camera.]
I'm 50 years old now. I've always been like this. It's not going to change.
I'm fundamentally dysfunctional.

8.
On the bright side, I guess I don't need to feel pressured to try and become someone anymore.
Because now I know that's probably not even possible.

Witchy me in black with my hair pulled into an updo with chopsticks sits on a hovering broomstick and looks down at a visiting snake. A full moon's reflection shimmers in a mountainside lake, while a campfire keeps me nice and warm.

It's Portfolio Day and I'm technically an artist, but not a pro. I long ago gave up the idea that my art would earn me a living.

So now I just say, "I draw indie comics. You've probably never heard of me." I really lean into that, actually. Which is one reason why my avi is Hipster Ariel.

Also, the source material is trash and I seem to be the only one who knows it, but they pay my bills while I do real work... like a punk-band coven battling the powerful wizard, David Bowie (coming soon?)

I'm just blowing some steam here in my secret identity, and I trust no one is actually reading it anytway. The artist I'm talking about seems genuinely sweet and loves making comics. I had no part in choosing to work with her and she deeply had no choice in working with me, A Real Weirdo.

The publisher and editor don't like me either, but that's because I've been sick and missing deadlines, which is fair. I mean, sure, First Second sent us a $100 Grubhub gift when they heard I was sick, but yknow, First Second is the nicest comic book publisher in history, so. Heart you, Robyn.

I got hired for this gig based 100% on a sample 10-page script I did in a half-dead haze, a single-draft having never read or even heard of the books. And quickly at that. It took 2 months to decide on an artist. The publisher had never heard of me, and I still think doesn't know my other work.

13.10.2025 22:59 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Establishing shots don't have to be splash pages. 12-panel spreads aren't a chore, and I don't overpack panels. I drew several books of Pictures of You at 10-panel PAGES let alone spreads, often dialogue-heavy crowd scenes at that. And I am NOT a skilled illustroator. Experience matters.

13.10.2025 22:59 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

This is a rant. Disregard.

The most common note I get from one GN collaborators is "too many panels" on a spread, which is true, but we have to pack two novels into 256 pages. We're gonna have 14-panel spreads here and there. Some of this is going to get squeezed, our job is to figure out what.

13.10.2025 22:59 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I realize I might not be the best example of this, though, since I also halso my bank card details memorized and I know that's weird.
