The execution of such unappealing alien designs in the movies rings as especially pretentious, though, because of how Abrams’ camera constantly pushes in or swoops around these abominations as though they’re anything to marvel at, let alone consider comparable to Yoda or Jabba the Hutt.

RJ didn’t start this problem, of course. Like most problems with Disney Wars, Abrams is at fault for the terrible design sensibilities, and many of the choices came from his hyperfixation on using rubber masks and puppets (even when they later became augmented with CGI).

The thing about Ackbar’s death in TLJ is that it’s not just an unsatisfying way to write a fan favorite character out of the story, but it also gets rid of one of the only creatures in the movie that has memorable and popular design, while the film affords ample time to far inferior versions.

In a way, Zod was actually seeking out his own death, since even beyond his threat of “You die or I do,” he was knowingly creating a scenario where Clark would have no other option, and he clearly understood what Clark’s priorities would be.

Zod’s character still gets off easy when compared to real-world imperialists, though, since he was genetically engineered to be incapable of imagining a better world, while guys like Hitler and Neytanyahu conduct their massacres of millions of their own volition, for the love of the game.

Man of Steel does a really good job of showing how incompatible multiculturalism is with any sort of hierarchy of racial superiority.

“My Superman would have found a better way than killing him!” When your enemy is Super Saiyan Neytanyahu? I’m skeptikal.

Haven’t seen the film since we watched it in a film class several years back, but I recall being really grossed by how it was framed as “correcting” her sexuality.

Same thing happened with people conceding that the prequels were right on the money about the war-hungry trajectory post-9/11 U.S. has been on, even though George Lucas was commenting on the political violence that transforms democracies into dictatorships all throughout global history.

You see this a lot with film that get a second wave of appreciation years after they came out, from people who see how relevent the film is because of a new cultural development.

It’s something that many Americans are advocating for these days in the anti-ICE protests, and it represents part of how I view artistic genius, which involves someone being in touch with many different levels of energy in a culture and being able to touch a lot of them at once.

I’ve been really transfixed lately on how strong Man of Steel’s message is on individuals’ right to their own privacy and their right to come out on their own schedule about whatever part of their identity are feared or marginalized.
