This was one of my favourite pages to set โ it took longer than any other page in the book (each scarab is a separate photo, so it's 24 separate images to size properly and line up), but great fun to put together ๐

So gutted I couldn't get down for this (the joys of chronic health conditions ...). But, Ancient Egypt in 50 Discoveries is an amazing book written by some very talented people; definitely one for the Christmas list!

One of the Egyptian galleries with visitors wandering around.
My youngest decided a trip to the World Museum was her chosen activity for her birthday (that's my girl!), so while she and her gaggle of teens are wandering around the various exhibits, I've set up camp in the Egyptian galleries. There could be worse ways to spend my Saturday morning โฆ

Using photography to nurture your mental health | Tetisheri
Find out how starting a photography hobby - like other forms of artistic pursuits - can help you nurture your mental health.
It's #WorldMentalHealthDay, so I thought I'd reshare this article I wrote a few years ago about using photography as a way to help nurture mental health. I wrote it when we were first thrust into the pandemic lockdown, but it's still just as relevant today.

Nibiru and Planet Nine โ have scientists found the home of the Annunaki? | Nick Garratt
Claims that we have found "Planet Nine" โ and that it might be Niburu, home of the mystical Anunnaki โ owe more to science fiction than to reality.

Hugh Mangum, an photographer, travelled all across the US from the 1890s till his death in 1922s.
Possibly ignoring segregation laws in some places he welcomed everybody in front of his camera.
The results are fantastic.
If only these photos could talk.

The full moon with the shadow of the Earth covering the top left quarter.
We didn't get to see much of the #LunarEclipse tonight, because we had to wait for the moon to rise above the houses across the street, but we managed to see a bit of it before the shadow of the earth disappeared.

The palette is oval and flat, and grey in colour. It has holes for stringing on the top centre, and where the eye would be. It has lines etched into the surface along the back, denoting the dorsal fin, and on the tail.
Six years ago, I photographed this rather beautiful fish-shaped greywacke palette for the Garstang Museum of Archaeology's Before Egypt exhibition. It was found at the Hierakonpolis Fort Cemetery in Egypt, and dates to the Predynastic Period (c.4000โ3000 BCE). #AncientEgypt #Egyptology

The fact that the thing we're calling artificial intelligence *can't do math* and yet we're jamming it into programs that successfully *have done math* for decades, then warning people against using the AI to do math, seems like an excellent summary of where we are.

Why do we love pictures?
A few thoughts to celebrate World Photography Day
Hey friends, in celebration of World Photography Day, I'm rerunning a post from last year. My advice: Dedicate your life to photography. Practice a little every day. Look and learn. It will change your life! www.flakphoto.news/p/why-do-we-...

A blue, wheeled trolley with three trays of small Roman-era Egyptian artefacts. There are ceramic pots and statuettes, and a few pieces of jewellery.
Six years ago today I embarked upon the first of many sessions photographing artefacts in the collection at Manchester Museum for their Golden Mummies of Egypt exhibition. Having a trolley full of objects wheeled up to my photography corner in the museum stores was just utter joy!

The photography is understated, thoughtful and just beautiful. And it's made all the greater with the knowledge that McCullin's photography over the last couple of decades has been a kind of therapy for the decades he spent documenting war and terror.
His photographic eye is just outstanding. 2/2

Don McCullin's photo of ancient pyramids in Sudan. In the foreground is a sand dune with a man on a camel. The pyramids are visible dropping behind the sand dune.
Just been reminded of some of my absolute favourite photography: Don McCullin's photography of culture and heritage, particularly of ancient sites like this one from the pyramids of the ancient kingdom of Kush (now part of Sudan). 1/2
