Well, nobody else is leading in Europe, besides Lagarde. Total leadership vacuum from Germany, France and Italy. Countries like Denmark are actually doing things. EU citizens demand more EU defense action and integration. VDL at least attempts to provide some leadership.

What would it take for Merz to sit down with a Draghi for a long conversation. As long as Merz refuses to understand that his country’s future depends on the future of the EU, the decline of Germany will continue. And Germany will continue to need high levels of immigration.

Federalisation is happening de facto in a myriad ways, unlike previously in EU history. Opposite of 90s-00s when euro and Treaty revisions followed the trad community method. Now Covid and Ukraine forcing ad hoc and creativity. Ukraine joining (in 5 years) will require re-boot/Treaty rewiring.
