Afkortingen (algemene regels) Wanneer schrijf je een afkorting met hoofdletters en wanneer niet? En wanneer komen er punten?

Ik kan me toch zo opwinden over die STOMME taalregel in het Nederlands dat je afkortingen meestal met kleine letters schrijft. onzetaal.nl/taalloket/af...
Donder op met je 'ai'. Als ik kleine letters zie, wil ik dat kunnen lezen als een woord. Hoofdletters geven meteen aan dat het een afkorting is.
