The homophobic censorship we saw a few decades ago is now used to censor trans people.

One element of the political policing intimidation attempt is over. We played a historic set at Glastonbury. Whole area closed an hour before due to crowds. A celebration of love and solidarity. A sea of good people at the world's most famous festival. Shortly afterwards we learn of an active police investigation. An investigation that followed after the Prime Minister himself said it "was not appropriate" we played Glastonbury. Walk off stage to the rapturous sounds of good people and into the creaking scheming sounds of the establishment.

This "investigation" was reported across the world's media often with wildly misleading headlines. Every single person who saw our set knew no law was broken, not even close....yet the police saw fit to publicly announce they were opening an investigation. Why open and publicise an investigation into fuck all? This is political. This is targetted. This is state intimidation.

After the media damage is inflicted and seen by millions of eyes - you receive a private email to say there's no evidence and no action - that is seen by two people only. There is no public apology, they don't send this to media or post it on police accounts. We will continue to fight. We will continue to win.

The term "transvestite" can be used as a slur (and we should call it out when it is), meant to imply that trans people are merely clothing fetishists* and so not worthy of respect. But it's important to know it hasn't always meant that. We can uplift its other meanings and find hope & power there.

the second is Suzie Izzard, whose stand-up routines as a self-proclaimed "executive transvestite" or "action transvestite" in the late 20th century presented crossdressing as cool and fun and witty and confident.

It'd be remiss of me not to mention two other figures who have shifted the usage of "transvestite" - the first is Lou Sullivan. His "A Transvestite Answers a Feminist" offers an account of the interiority of crossdressing (in this case as male) that Hirschfeld identified back in the 19th century.

Others, like Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) demonstrated ways of reimagining "transvestite" as a capacious category more related to societal marginalisation than access to healthcare, and an invitation to fight oppression alongside other revolutionaries.

There were organisations in the 20th century who referred to themselves as "transvestites" - some were aimed at people who rejected or were refused medical transition and could only see a future for themselves cross-dressing part-time, perhaps due to family or marital status.

Little wonder then, that when anti-trans feminists of the 1970s harassed musician and activist Beth Elliott for her engagement in women's liberation, they referred to her derogatorily as a "transvestite".

Much like the ways, as Kit Heyam examines, that trans people have sometimes appropriated intersex self-histories to legitimate their self-understandings, "transsexual" has been valued over "transvestite" as conferring greater legitimacy to trans identities.

Within the emerging gender identity clinics of mid-20th century USA, being classed as a "transsexual" meant access to (or desire to access) medical transition. Being classed as a "transvestite" meant exclusion or rejection of medical transition.
