Underpass in the dark at dusk
Sign over unlit subway underpass suggesting 'This Way for a safer journey'
Underpass lights out at St George's. Maybe due to Odeon going up in flames yesterday but sadly no one in charge thought this might be dangerous enough to fix in a hurry

Narrow rebuilt footway with concrete slabs and in situ poured battered kerb. Sign poles and street lamp posts in carriageway leaving parked cars 0.5m from kerb, space that could be footway
Narrow footway improvement kerb line clashes with lamp post and os fudged around the post base
Lamp post base showing how new kerb has been laid straight through it
Penang footways are often a bit dodge. This welcome improvement with in situ kerb mostly went kind of well

Cycling along tree lined Klang riverside path. Merdeka 118 tower skyscraper towers over skyline
Cycling in MikeBikes orange vests along 3 lane dual carriageway street with blue cycle lane (with cars parked in it). Speed humps mean traffic isn't too difficult to contend with
Cycle tour group cycling in Indian quarter of Brickfields with parked cars and coloured arches along footway edge
Happy cycle rider in orange hi vis. Stopped at busy junction with bus passing, overhead monorail and motorbikes chaos. Cycle riders have to take the lane to be safe
Loved the riverside cycle tour on Kuala Lumpur city centre [Mike Bikes] with my son and some other tourists. Back roads, river path, temples and great lunch all in Dutch orange

Only way between development separated by double height elevated highway is by muddy path across a vacant lot
Tree route heave on footway that has severely pushed up paving slabs
Route from private development to pedestrian crossing is a muddy path between planting. Ped crossing has signal post in middle of pathway
Paved path behind crash barrier next to double deck elevated highway to dodgy staircase. An unofficial but well used footpath from one side of road to other
Normal walking in KL has all those very basic difficulties of sub division development and lack of public planning interest in making sure there are good pedestrian connections, streets and spaces

Marina Bay Sands lobby with tall roof
One of the mega malls to traverse on multiple levels to get from harbour to Gardens by the Bay.
Getting 500m from Singapore Harbour to Gardens by the Bay involves crossing 2 dual carriageways, weaving through the massive Marina Bay Sands hotel and multiple lifts and escalators (& via mega brand mall and green bridges). Fun but convoluted & 2nd class - could have been straightforward and level

View of west KL suburb with multilane highway and toll gate surrounded by remnant jungle. Skyscrapers and supersized villas line the valley.
View from 21 floor apartment over KL hills with skyscrapers and villas cut through by multilane highway. Scraps of remnant green space left over between
Always a culture shock returning to KL to visit family. Only the size of Birmingham but built with total US style car-based planning like a megalopolis. Lots of buzz but basic things sacrificed: nature, rivers, walking and cycling. Fightbacks are happening but uphill gradient is now so steep

Space Syntax heat map of Canterbury city (UK) with most connected streets in red, transitioning orange, yellow and green to least connected in blue
Generous of Space Syntax to share a national connectedness map. It necessarily only covers the main links but here in Canterbury goes to show why the ring road around the city walls is often chocker as these routes are most connected locally spacesyntax-openmapping.netlify.app#14/51.2799/1...

Interestingly StrΓΈget in Denmark is similar length (half the width at c.12m) and has no cycling too, but outdone by other city neighbourhoods now that have cycle access. Can't cycling be permitted off peak? Sad that they haven't tried, at least not presented any design option that includes it
