Space Syntax heat map of Canterbury city (UK) with most connected streets in red, transitioning orange, yellow and green to least connected in blue
Generous of Space Syntax to share a national connectedness map. It necessarily only covers the main links but here in Canterbury goes to show why the ring road around the city walls is often chocker as these routes are most connected locally spacesyntax-openmapping.netlify.app#14/51.2799/1...

Interestingly StrΓΈget in Denmark is similar length (half the width at c.12m) and has no cycling too, but outdone by other city neighbourhoods now that have cycle access. Can't cycling be permitted off peak? Sad that they haven't tried, at least not presented any design option that includes it

White painted suburban brick church in Copenhagen with stepped gables with large roads around planted triangle islands in front
Front elevation of the church with steps up to west door
I love the restrained interwar simplicity of GrΓΈndals Church on edge of Frederiksberg built 1928 in National Romantic Late Gothic design by architect Julius Smith. Sits on a Y junction of giant interwar roads

I had this on a recent project. 2 way cycle track proposal favoured by communuty consultation hijacked and cut, behind closed doors, by local 'stakeholder' group in favour of retaining few (19) kerbside parking spaces. Opportunity lost for another generation for short term political dogma

Homezone in straight 19c street of terraced houses with lots of trees. Still lots of parked cars but a quiet area close to city centre.
Homezone area with picnic table and play house in street. Vehicles can pass through carefully but parking discouraged with planters, tree etc in this c.30m section
Other unsung spaces I love in Copenhagen are the once modest (but prob now really expensive) potato row houses with their narrow streets and homezone segments

2 5 storey faceted glass blocks opposite each other across street with glazed link bridge on gloomy day
The architectonic exterior of the building along the side access. It's more impressive inside in the Troposphere I believe.
Was passing the Niels Bohr building at Cph University and couldn't help wondering how the running costs seem to have blown some of the Landscape Architecture programme www.landskabsarkitekter.dk/Aktuelt/neds...

Giant climbing wall arch with graffiti frames entrance to community park
Green space surrounded by 5 storey blocks with fading yellow banana mound along edge. Graffiti abounds
Rear of entrance climbing arch from inside park. Some expensive holds on this. Winter trees frame the space
Some of Copenhagens most impressive spots are the unsung community spaces like this BaNanna Park. Born out of local protest against mote development

36% traffic evaporation - good job. Wish it had been fully closed to vehicles when I was cycling Lonsdale Rd to school 50 yrs ago. Still makes me shudder what traffic speed and conditions we put up with

Right photo same location today 2025 showing No Cycling/ Cyclists Dismount sign plate on 2.4m high doubble posts. This is promoted NCN1 Crab n Wrinkle cycle route to Whistable
Encouraging to see my city has at last spent some cash on improving this cycle route (NCN1). VFM shown with...erm, a new sign for very tall people on cycles, or perhaps penny farthing riders. Maybe a taster of what long-awaited LCWIP will achieve

Long avenue with segregated cycle track and footway that crosses side road without level change..but lots of tactile warning paving
Seems to hinted at with a half forgiving 12mm upstand swen better here. Which tactiles would you lose with step? Entry kerbs might also avoid need for Give Way markings too

Side road crossing with cycle lanes ane raised footway with Give Way road markings for vehicles to indicate clear priority to walking and cycling across the junction
While jeg elsker Danmark and Copenhagen in particular, the sooner these are just internationally known as side road junction crossings and standardised the better

Main road network all planned by LDDC back in the 80s when the area was just bombsites - LBN never envisaged anything other than low density resi. Retro fitting stuff to prioritise walk cycle as a place to live now needs infra surgery

A row of 5 bike lockers in a Canterbury street with Bike Hubs graphic on side
Man in his conservatory on BikeHubs website explains how to use these new lockers, though without a bike. I worked out it involves 15 steps (!) to get your bike in one first time. Well intentioned but clunky and too much friction compared to a car park app. I hope my booking for next week works.

Sadly missed it but absolute credit to @lb-southwark.bsky.social running a 'Guided Cycle Consultation' where Officers actually got out & cycled with residents to consult changes. People saying it was the best consultation they've ever seen. FANTASTIC progress that every Council should copy.
