“Five matches,” I said. “I need five matches.” “Why five?” “You’ll see.” Long shrugged and Jones produced a box of matches from a jacket pocket. He extracted five and laid them on the table. “You have to hold them,” I said. Jones shifted in his seat. “Don’t worry, Sergeant. I won’t burn you, promise. I ain’t no monster.” He picked them up and held them in a row, heads upwards. “In a bundle, please,” I said. He rearranged them. “Which one do you want me to burn?” “The one in the middle,” Long said. I held out my hand, fingers loose. Matches were easy. Even safety matches like this, safe because of their outer layer. Get them hot enough and they happily stop being safe. The match in the middle sat squarely in my heat sense. They called me a monster. What the fuck did these two know about anything? Drag me here, try to fit me up for arson and I’m the monster? The fire inside was fit to rip and tear and howl and I clicked my fingers and flicked it outwards. I dumped it into the head of the middlemost match and spread my fingers wide. The match head popped and flared and the flame sprung out. I found the balance. I became the pivot, channeling the heat up in a narrow cylinder, away from all of the other match heads and the wooden body of the matches. Pulled it away and poured the excess heat into the bricks lining the interview room. Jones began twitching in his seat as the match burned down through the bundle. “Richard,” he said, “you promised.”

Q3: it isn't that Ricky loves booze, but rather he loves that it helps him forget. He loves women too, in one specific way. But the thing he lives for is working with children and seeing the innocence that shines out from their hearts

Q2: What Ricky fears more than anything is that he isn't the good guy people think he is. He knows how dangerous his power is, how easily it can hurt others, and he's terrified that one day he'll lose control and become the bad guy he suspects he secretly is

In Unforgiven, my second manuscript, main character Ricky a.k.a Pyro:
Q1: Ricky has...issues. Despite having power over heat, he has issues controlling himself, and he knows it. He struggles against himself and his self-destructive tendencies. He feels ashamed more often than proud.

In any event, what Red Line believes to be true isn't necessarily so. One other major character is in the know, and another has long since worked it out.

Good question! I don't know if I have, to be honest, but I built layers of deception into the character and setting. I want you to believe certain things about them, which drop by drop will turn out to be wrong. The revealed truth - and it will is revealed - catches other characters out.

This is Red Line, one of the two protagonists of my first novel. Nobody knows who is under the armour - a secret identity is a valuable thing. Red Line only cares about obligation and duty, and if that means criminals die as a result, so be it.

I'm Phil and I started writing as a pandemic project. I finished and self-pubbed that book, am looking for a home for its prequel - superhero fantasies both, with teeth - and am currently working on an autobiographical project and a gangster crime novel!

Finished Adrian Tchaikovsky's Bear Head last night. I'll be starting Five Decembers by James Kestrel tonight.
