A photograph of a spread from FiveEvil showing the nuclear explosion piece in situ, along with some freakish doll art.
FiveEvil is our standalone horror game by @fromthemorgue.bsky.social Itβs very clever and really good. In fact it was the last thing I played.

A piece of art from FiveEvil - a montage with a man smoking a cigarette overlays with a round ashtray full of stubbed out cigarettes. The word βPUSHβ appears written backwards, as if itβs on the other side of a glass door or seen in a mirror.
A piece of FiveEvil art that montages a nuclear explosion into a painterly US city scape. Itβs all in reds and oranges.
A gloomy painterly image in earthy tones of two figures wandering towards a ruined Manor house.
A montage from FiveEvil. A tall image of a railway tunnel or mine, with a skeleton lying between the tracks. Above the tunnel is a painterly rendition of a pistol.
Diving into some FiveEvil art tomorrow for the new book βNetherworldsβ. Really enjoyed working on these - montages and paint overs and assemblages is something Iβve always enjoyed doing, way back to the earliest days of my art foundation course. Nothing is wasted eh? FiveEvil is a handsome book.

Never played much scifi though I donβt think. Oh wait - a lot of Cyberpunk. I played in one Twilight 2000 game with a different group during a friends tiff, & it was absolutely terrible due to wildly divergent play styles. No talking in character or roleplaying with NPCs of any kind. Just killins.

We played dnd, but it was one among many, and never really felt like the 800lb gorilla. Which may account for why I still like it. We did the lot really - Dragon Warriors, Maelstrom, BECMI, AD&D, GW non-Glorantha Runequest (never been taken with Glorantha), CoC, MERP, WFRP, and our own games.

But Iβd forgotten Iβd made these 3d mockups of the games and supporting material.

Havenβt done one of these in ages! Our Maskwitches Mask generator is free to use. You can generate masks for your maskwitches, even print them to make into actual masks. You can also generate characters too. Works on your phone or desktop. Nice.

I have a TED talk about how "games as vectors to make accoutrements, which profit everyone except the customer", which just needs a final scene about how the accoutrements WE make are different and good. (I mean they are - they all can be replaced by buttons or a pencil, by design. But still: irony)

Once again it is time to be clear in how much I enjoy Seyed's reviews. I have found them extremely enlightening about our own material. The summaries of systems are really sharp.
I've said it before, but I really admire Seyed's ability to engage with creator intentions. Nice.

Inevitable post-script: "They've lost 35k before they begin" was inaccurate language. "Lost" is incorrect.
"Spent" is better to aid understanding that spending money to make money is absolutely fine and dandy as a concept, but you probably wanna be careful with how much and for what reason.
02.02.2026 10:06 β π 9 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
What I like about this sort of maths is the independence it offers. You gather data from observation, and then make decisions for you, and your specific needs and desires. You know what youβre doing and why. And thatβs my ideal place to be.
Right I better do some work eh?
02.02.2026 09:57 β π 14 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
But what I like isnβt the point. Itβs YOUR project/business/game/art. Even defining which of those things best categorises your efforts is important.
A lot of words for some βknow thyselfβ Socrates guff. ;)
02.02.2026 09:57 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
Again, maybe the big-splash-plus-template is how you want to roll. That might be your ideal way of working. Cool!
Iβve done that and I didnβt love it as much as I love moving slower and more directly, without farming creative stuff out. I canβt knock βbigβ as I learned my trade doing it that way.
02.02.2026 09:57 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
The model you choose determines a bunch of other stuff. To deliver a larger offering can potentially takes more people. Which moves what youβre doing closer to needing to be templated. Which is fine. But itβs not nothing, creatively. Templating (a term Iβm using very broadly here) sets a tone.
02.02.2026 09:57 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
Now the flip side is there are some efficiencies in doing 4 together. You can ship them all at once from the printer, you have a larger lump sum to negotiate down expenditures, potentially. For me that doesnβt hold up against quality of life benefits of going slower. But there are reasons to do it.
02.02.2026 09:57 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
If that same Kickstarter is paying 25% to a promoter, and 10% to the platform? Theyβve lost 35% before they begin. So theyβre making 4 books on 65k. Thats 16.25 a book. Whoops. Thatβs quite a lot of pain for fancy optics.
02.02.2026 09:57 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
So examples. A Kickstarter that makes (say) 100k looks groovy. And that has optics benefits. But if itβs for 4 big books? Thatβs 25k a book, with a lot of deliverables. I know we can fairly reliably get 25k a book and spread that work across time. Heck I know we can do 30, and make 120k for the 4.
02.02.2026 09:57 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
And hey - as Iβm often attempting to do - this isnβt about βgoodβ vs βbadβ. Itβs about understanding what you might choose to do and why. For me, itβs really important to constantly be searching for the sweet spot of costs vs creativity vs quality of life for our purposefully small team.
02.02.2026 09:57 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
And youβd start to get a sense of what levels of risk vs reward youβre happy with as a creator or company runner, and the kind of projects you want to make.
Iβm a massive fan of getting under the hood on the numbers to understand why you might want to do or not do a given thing.
02.02.2026 09:57 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
It can then get quite exciting (for certain values of βexcitingβ) when you look at how that content is delivered. Does it use a lot of freelancers? Did it use/require third party promotion? Some folks are paying north of 30% of their total and more, which is wild
02.02.2026 09:57 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
Random publishing thoughts 𧡠: itβs interesting to do maths and work out how much a crowdfunding effort has made per equivalent item offered or even per page of content. You can then usually also work out some ratios for the size of the team working on it. It can be surprising stuff.
