Health & Fitness Research. Is movement enough — or does rest matter too? A study of over 10,000 women in Atlantic PATH explored how sleep quality and physical activity relate to breast cancer risk. Researchers found that: Women who frequently had trouble sleeping were more likely to develop breast cancer, even when their total sleep time was “normal.” Those who were highly physically active had a lower risk. Sleep duration alone wasn’t strongly linked to risk, suggesting that quality matters more than quantity. Together, these findings highlight the importance of both movement and rest in cancer prevention. Feng et al. International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. 2025

Hypertension Research. Can artificial intelligence help predict who will develop high blood pressure? Using data from over 18,000 participants in Alberta’s Tomorrow Project, researchers compared several machine learning models with a traditional statistical method. They found that newer AI approaches didn’t outperform the conventional Cox model — all methods had similar accuracy in predicting hypertension. This suggests that when the dataset is solid and features are well chosen, simpler, time-tested tools can still hold their own. Chowdhury et al. Scientific Reports, 2023.

Hypertension Research. Your first blood pressure reading? It might not be the most accurate. Successive readings improve risk prediction. One blood pressure reading might not tell the full story. Using CARTaGENE data, researchers found that taking multiple blood pressure readings — and ignoring the first one — gives a clearer picture of someone’s heart health risk. The study supports the idea that more than one measurement leads to better care. Desbiens et al., Hypertension, 2023.

Hypertension Research. Researchers find antihypertensive drug choices often don’t align with clinical guidelines, especially in Quebec How closely do doctors follow guidelines when prescribing blood pressure medication? A recent study using CARTaGENE data looked at trends in Quebec from 2009 to 2021 and found that prescriptions don’t always line up with clinical guidelines. The findings highlight a need for better awareness and education to help ensure people get the most effective treatment. Ivensky, et al. Journal of Kidney Health & Disease, 2024.

Hypertension Research. Statin use was linked to slightly lower diet quality in adults with metabolic syndrome, especially in older, lower-income groups Researchers looked at diet quality in adults with metabolic syndrome who weren’t living with heart disease, using data from CARTaGENE. They found that those taking statins — medications to lower cholesterol — tended to eat fewer vegetables and whole grains. This pattern was more common in older adults, people with lower incomes, and those with a history of high blood pressure. The findings raise important questions about how medication use might influence lifestyle choices. Bélanger et al. Canadian Journal of Cardiology Open. 2023.

No major differences in oral microbiome diversity were observed for prostate and breast cancer cases. However, results indicate that there may be associations between oral microbiome and colon cancer disease status. One type of bacteria, Fusobacterium periodonticum, stood out as more common in those with colon cancer, pointing to an area needing more research.
