CHARLES RAFFERTY
The Problem with Early Warnings

People don't like to leave a party unless the house is actually on fire. Even then, if the flames are far enough away to be pretty, they'll finish their drink, take one more pass at the hors d'oeuvres.
How things happen has always been unclear. Hurricanes begin in a place where no one lives.
Agents of the government start to wear masks. Fascism is a word my neighbors won't use yet. They are following
the law, they say, and the sirens are coming for someone else.

Every time I’ve tried to involve AI in one of my creative pursuits it has spit out the exact same level of meh. No matter the model, no matter the project, it simply cannot match what I have in my head. Which would be fine, but it absolutely cannot match the fun of making the imperfect version of that idea that I may have made on my own either. Instead, it simulates the act of brainstorming or creative exploration, turning it into predatory pay-for-play process that, every single time, spits out deeply mediocre garbage. It charges you for the thrill of feeling like you’re building or making something and, just like a casino β€” or online dating, or pornography, or TikTok β€” cares more about that monetizable loop of engagement, of progress, than it does the finished product. What I’m saying is generative AI is a deeply expensive edging machine, but for your life.

Absolute banger from @garbageday.email today on Gen AI: "It is not a revolution in computing, but a revolution in accepting lower standards."

Person who actually deserves a trophy is the artist who made the FIFA peace prize trophy look like everyone in the entire world holding their head in their hands out of secondhand embarrassment

When we were in StL, the checkout kid at the grocery store asked where we were from, and I did my whole "sad trombones Wichita" reply. My heart BROKE when he stopped what he was doing, looked right at me all interested, and asked with sincerity "Is it better than it is here?"

Among the most important things right now, for those of us Americans who want to understand our world and our place in it, is to shift from understanding ourselves as citizens of a democracy to members of a captive, restive, rebellious public an autocrat is seeking to consolidate control over.

They say the Fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, & self-control, but last night I self-regulated and put myself to sleep by imagining I was kicking Stephen Miller and JD Vance in the face.

Last thing: Does not GET that her faith has been totally co-opted and that she can't say "they're not the real Christians" bc Christianity is redefined. They own it now, not her. And no "Christian" is safe in this admin. ...Her generation's theology led us here and she has to reckon w that.

Reality is so fast/weird/gross right now that anyone who knows specifics of the news and talks about it (like me!) sounds like an extremist w mental health problems. You're forced to say rude, crass, disgusting things in casual discussion, and then insist the Dems didn't invent it as slander.

Also, her gen is used to US being stable & reliable & functional. They have no concept of life in Hungary. They're used to government keeping the daily dangers of life mute and invisible. They hate gov but love bridges that work, planes that fly, milk that won't kill you. They take it for granted.

And her generation is used to slow change. This is happening so fast. She wasn't worried as much the first term bc "how much damage can he do in 4 yrs" but the world has changed. Every day she, like me, is in high alert waiting for a new crisis, perhaps even war. Her gen doesn't get it.

Doesn't even understand where someone would call themselves "BigBalls" bc they don't understand the internet. They thought things like Twitter, social media, crypto (what IS crypto???) were fad things they didn't need to understand. Now it seems to be defining the world (if you're paying attn).
