Agreed that “fatigue” doesn’t quite fit. There is fatigue, I think, but from more than just AI. Constant and rapid change is exhausting to human brains and tech is largely not a restorative tool. The roll out of AI into everything has been rushed and it’s not making lives demonstrably better.

I considered writing a long carefully constructed argument laying out the harms and limitations of AI, but instead I wrote about being a hater. Only humans can be haters.

That’s a great idea but are there no Reference Librarians to do that?

I’ve been able to enlighten a couple of people, but have plenty of work to do on my crusade.

Same for me. My students always prefer print to digital.

In addition to warning kids off it, I’m trying to get colleagues to see how bad AI is so they stop using it.

Forcing people to use AI w/ the argument more=better is like thinking that a giant bowl of slop will magically transform into something edible by adding two drops of high quality ingredients. With AI (or on the Internet at all) you have 8 bad answers and 2 good ones, you don’t end up 2 good answers.

Words matter.

The fantasy is a Jarvis for everyone - best friend, confidante, et al, but the reality is going to be the dilution of humanity, a stripping away of human connection, human thought and real autonomy in society.

Yes, they have an outsized view of themselves in relation to the everyperson. They view their success like an anointing of a completely unique exceptionalism that only they could possibly attain and is theirs alone to share as they see fit because everyone else is beneath them.

When I read the name I immediately understood. Prometheus challenged the Gods for the good of humanity. He is the underdog hero of the story and that’s how these “Titans” of tech see themselves. They believe they are saviors of humanity rather than the cruel powerful gods many of the public see.

It’s really loss of time that can’t made up. It’s like lost sleep. You don’t really catch up because you can’t ever get it back. Students experienced gaps in learning but expectations and many processes remained the same and it’s simply unrealistic.

Statements like, “The system is broken,” absolve the people in charge of it of their responsibility. The System isn’t broken. The System doesn’t have thoughts and feelings. It doesn’t make mistakes. It’s simply working as well as the people in charge are running it.

This is no better than an outright book ban. When select identities and ideas are sidelined, the message is clear that only some are acceptable. Meanwhile AI chatbots hallucinate and social media does real mental harm to kids. But sure, books are the problem.
