Surprise is west of Phoenix and has significantly grown over the last 20 years. Several speakers tonight have tearfully talked about the life they’ve built in the area as the children and grandchildren of the migrant field workers back when Surprise was just miles and miles of agricultural land.

A crowd of protesters holding up a large “NO ICE” message where each letter is its own sign. Others are holding up signs with messages like: Stop ICE for Good Believe your eyes not Trump’s lies Don’t warehouse people Inhumane Corrupt Evil We will never accept it A man has a DIY white long sleeve shirt that reads “no ice facility in surprise”

A graduate from Dysart High School, the school across from the proposed concentration camp just spoke out against the facility, describing it as a “death camp.” They point out that Dysart High has a 60% Hispanic population. Another speaker said there are actually 9 schools in the nearby vicinity.

Most of the windows are not accessible by foot but the ones that are have been mostly covered. I found a section without covers — the inside is still empty but you can see the roll-up garage door leading to the next section of the facility. The back of each section also has huge roll-up doors.

We understand there are questions about the potential presence of DHS in Surprise, as well as the potential of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations. The City was not aware that there were efforts underway to purchase the building, was not notified of the transaction by any of the parties involved and has not been contacted by DHS or any federal agency about the intended use of the building. It's important to note, Federal projects are not subject to local regulations, such as zoning.

When it comes to immigration enforcement, local law enforcement does not enforce federal immigration laws; Surprise Police Department enforces local and state laws. While we do not participate in ICE operations, we also cannot interrupt or prevent their operations. When responding to any call for service, you can expect the Surprise Police Department to carry out its mission to serve our community ethically and with unwavering commitment by upholding the highest standards while enforcing the law fairly and impartially.

Tonight will be the first Surprise City Council meeting since the Jan. 23rd sale. According to the City, federal projects are not subject to local zoning regulations. They also claim they were unaware of the purchase.

It’s hard to put into perspective how truly massive the warehouse is that was recently sold by the Rockefeller Group to the Department of Homeland Security for $70 million to build a concentration camp in Surprise, AZ. Across the street is a huge neighborhood and a school. It’s 400,000-square-feet.

Today ICE officers once again arrested observers at gunpoint, caused lockdowns of neighborhood schools, and harassed people on the street simply for their skin color.

Nothing has changed, despite the rhetoric from “leaders.”
