They're not wildly different games in the same way that LoZ:ALttP and OoT are not wildly different games; you can clearly see that they're building on top of one another, even if the inspiration is moving away from Rambo II/The Great Escape and closer to Mission Impossible/Die Hard.

I played MG/MG2/MGS earlier this year. In all three games you have:
- Infiltration of enemy base looking for a scientist
- Elevator between two or three main buildings
- Codec calls
- OSP of items/weapons
- 4th Wall Break mechanics
- Over-the-top Bosses
- Betrayed by MOC
- Hind and Metal Gear fights
