On the bright side, being in the absolute middle of DEEP tech and DEEP instructional non-tech (and trying to make the two atoms actually meaningfully touch) was an incredibly positive experience for me in the end. Just had to not go crazy or die in the process.

I was on the non-tech side even when I was on the tech side. And the non-tech side is lovely and has potential. So . . . truthfully:

Maybe we should think of 'free' in the term free will as "without cost" or "fungible" instead of as "self-starting."

And since I have this same 'problem' as you, "What am I going to say next?" is equally impossible to answer. But bring these two together and add knowledge and now it's MAGICAL.

Now, I can, from America, speak my thought "Why don't we eat owls?" and you anywhere in the world can SHARE that thought.

For education, I think the main point of any free will discussion should be to really notice that "What are you going to think next?" is impossible to answer, because you don't create thoughts ex nihilo (inventors, not creators).

Galileo pointed out (anticipating the principle of equivalence as Penrose likes to mention) that a sphere of fireworks will fall [in a vacuum] as a sphere. Free will isn't required for things to move (together) and for structure to appear.

There's always been a 'bless his heart' attitude, I think, around math-is-everywhere advocacy. For students, it just isn't. They may learn 'about' it in the outside world (the real definition of 'conceptual understanding' --> 'aboutness learning). But they learn its social MEANINGS in school.
