Over the past 60 years, there have been several attempts to move forward with a national pharmacare program.

And while the program today only applies to contraceptive and diabetes medications, devices and supplies, and hormone replacement therapy for menopause, it marks an important shift in public health care and the public provision of pharmaceuticals to Canadians.
