Hi I’m a rando from the internet and I’ve done exactly what you describe! I bought a kayak last year and I’m over 40. On flat water it’s really easy and fun! Have a great time!!

The last thing I’m gonna say about the current news cycle is that there are people all around you carrying the enormous pain of having been abused underneath the brave face they had to learn to wear.

Listen to survivors who are ready to talk. Do not press those who are not. And step gently.

One thing I’ll say about the NYT, it really has its finger on the pulse of a certain type of guy

I was in a fury for 36 hours but have now (yet again) accepted that this country will never love me & I’m only here to look at dogs and eat cake until I slip my mortal coil

I wonder if people also felt they were losing their minds during watergate. Someone should find out

"You are either protecting p***philes, or you're protecting victims. It's only one or the other. You can't ride the gray line, it doesn't exist."

It is important to not wish physical harm on anyone who says the destruction of teenage girls’ lives is no big deal; in a civil society someone should be able to say teenage girls’ lives are meaningless without facing any negative repercussions, including mentions of woodchippers

I really don’t want to hear from anyone else but the victims. The rest of it - the jokes, the punditry, it’s further exploitation & explicit moral harm

A string of unprintable profanities goes right here

this is heinous and disgusting: mild objections to obscene conduct are met with immediate consequences. The conduct itself? Shruggie emoticon

Can someone compassionate (no weird gross jokes) and well informed answer Nnedi’s question?

The idea that survivors should still have to cook dinner and do normal things normally, not yelling, is an outrageous expectation

13.11.2025 21:55 — 👍 6    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

i think this is maybe literally true and the social glue connecting trumpworld to competent people who act like they have things to lose was rape

13.11.2025 21:31 — 👍 269    🔁 50    💬 12    📌 1

In defining rape in law and public discourse, Catharine MacKinnon wrote, "The level of acceptable force is adjudicated starting just above the level set by what is seen as normal male sexual behavior, including the normal level of force, rather than at the victim's, or women's, point of violation."

Huge yes

Fundamentally, what happened in the wake of MeToo, Kavanaugh, etc. was men, en masse, realizing "if that's rape, then I'm a rapist" and then rejecting the awareness and the label *but not the conduct.* A patriarchy just isn't capable of producing a different result.

I increasingly think that the right’s rhetorical use of “rape” as an ultimate wrong that can be attributed to, say, racial others is not a hypocritical contradiction of their embrace of rape in practice, but in fact core to it: they degrade victims further by appropriating & mocking their suffering.

If there are (yet again) no consequences for these crimes then what’s happening here is that we are using other people’s life altering traumas for entertainment

The thing that gets me is that even at my angriest angry young woman, when everyone I knew was telling me to tone it down, I wouldn’t have dreamed it was this bad

You can make jokes about the rape of children - a literal war crime - or you can go ask your friends how they’re doing. It’s a test of character and a lot of you are failing
