We could probably attribute some level of loss aversion to it too. Even as there is increasing evidence that what people once had there is now gone, they feel the sting of loss by leaving.

It’s such a weird phenomenon. Standard “learned helplessness.” People will prefer the pain and trauma that is familiar over the risks of trying something new and possibly better.

As much as I’m baffled by him, I’m even more baffled by the tens of millions of people who can’t see him for what he is. It’s phenomenal (derogatory).

I shared this piece before, but never explained the story behind it. Earlier this year, my wife needed emergency surgery for an ectopic pregnancy. Within hours, what started as a worry turned into a terrifying reality. They had to remove the pregnancy and her fallopian tube to save her.

For those wondering: this is a canary resuscitator, once used in coal mines to revive birds after gas exposure. In my drawing, the door’s been left open and the bird left to die—a symbol of ignored warnings and failing safeguards for civil liberties in the U.S.
