Is there something going on right now that fosters malady? Everyone I know is having flare-ups and coming down with one thing after another. I rarely get sick and I’ve been dealing with health stuff since August

I was taken over the side by a cannonball and drowned in warm blue waters.
I bled out red into the grey mud of a trench.
And sometimes, rarely, I get to watch the sunset one last time as an old man.
There are a lot more, some are blurrier than others, few are happy.

The more they convince you that you can't rely on anyone, that every stranger is a potential enemy, the more money they make giving you the things a community should give you.

They want you isolated. They want you to think you have to do it all on your own. So then, when you think, "I need a ride somewhere," or "I need help with this," or "I need this made," you think, "I have to pay someone to do that," instead of "who do I know who will help me with that?"

My great grandfather was taken from Poland by the Reich in 1931. The last anyone ever saw of him, he was forced into building a bridge for the Germans. They bulldozed the family farm and my grandfather and remaining family fled to the States with nothing.

It was me. Older, leaner, scarred, armed and wearing a longcoat as worn as he was. He smirked with a weary, determined half-smile.
"Wait here until it's safe. I'll take it from here."

Had a dream once, a long time ago, where I was walking down a square, lightless, concrete hallway towards a light. I could hear screaming, gunfire and explosions getting louder as I got closer to the end of the hallway, which opened out to the vista of a ruined city.

We watch the stars bully the red sun out of the sky and stare into the violet, blackening abyss, a pair of smoky mystics laid out on a piece of American metal, embracing against the universe for warmth and listening for secrets from the dawn of time.

You’re a better shot than I am.

I wrap my hands around yours, show you how to squeeze the trigger and breathe. We spend hours deliberately chasing the cans around the wash with hot lead, nothing between the click of the hammer and the bark of a fledgling thunderbird but distant wind and the sound the earth makes.

We’re redlining across the Mojave at noon, looking for one of those spots from the movies where someone gave the desert a car and someone else brought her a washing machine, and the locals worship at the arid altar with bottles and cans because the rust here eats very, very slowly.

In the dream, you and I are driving a big, rumbling car from the Golden Age; sometimes it’s a ‘68 Charger that smells like leather inside, sometimes it’s ‘76 Econoline that smells like cigarettes and Armor-All.
