This is a new image of comet 3I/ATLAS, showing the development of a long tail of dust and gas as the object gets closer to the Sun.

As a reminder, the "I" in 3I/ATLAS stands for "interstellar".

Because this comet formed around a different star and is OLDER THAN THE SOLAR SYSTEM

This story unfolded pretty fast yesterday for a few reasons. The object was discovered on July 1st UTC by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System, or ATLAS team. A #NASA funded survey at the University of Hawaii. atlas.fallingstar.com 🔭🧪

Auroras have been on my mind lately… not only because I had an amazing opportunity to work in a rockstar Solar Terrestrial Sciences team this year but also with the insane displays that the Sun has blessed us with!
