That's a tough one. I haven't completely thought it through, but maybe one should distinguish between the cult followers and the cult enablers. The enablers should be punished openly and severely; the followers can be supported, but ultimately have to live with the consequences of their folly.

I don't agree with Cleese's assessment.

I think Trump knows everybody hates him.
He projects to be his base that he is popular because that's part of his con.
He gets what he wants through fear, bullying and coercion and I'm pretty certain he is under no illusion about that.
