eh, i don't think ad rates are there anymore. like, let's say I love a publication and give it 2000 pageviews per year -- looking at 5-6 articles per day. If my subscription is $50/year, they'd have to be making better than $25 CPM to be losing money, and that doesn't sound right.

to be fair, it's really helpful for revenue to be predictable and subscriptions do that. but it's an awful experience
