Be good. Bird looker, proud Canadian with Ukrainian roots, ex-angry scientist. I enjoy nature, sports, silly internet pictures & SCTV. Long term single blind n=1 study participant. YYC Albertan. He/him. A sometimes irrational mix of serious and silly.

20.02.2026 17:13 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0"Posed" is fair. Imo, there is a large inertia of the median small-c conservative voter in Alberta that is tough to change, even when the so-called conservatism becomes more radical.
(I think we're agreeing in principle, anyways)

20.02.2026 13:55 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A point that I think needs to be beaten into (our) thick Alberta skulls:
"Once you understand how equalization actually works, it unmasks the core of Smithβs complaints about it: βAlbertaβs taxpayersβ pay more into federal coffers than they receive solely as a function of having higher incomes."
I'm not going to apologize for the (many) Albertans who knew and approve of what the UCP really stood for, and would willingly vote for them again, but I do think that there are many who are coming to realize that the UCP are a far-right wolf in moderate conservative sheep's clothing.
20.02.2026 13:35 β π 4 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0NOWHERE in any of the UCP's previous election platform is there any of the policies that they actually implemented, from the anti-trans laws, book bans, pause on renewables, use of notwithstanding clause, Alberta police/border patrol, or a anti-immigration policy.
You can search it for yourself
A re-elected UCP government will introduce: The Alberta is Calling signing bonus. o A $1,200 payment for targeted skilled trades and professions where we have labour shortages - including in healthcare, childcare, and trades. Workers will be eligible after living here for a year.
They got 53% of the vote, but govern for the furthest right portion of their base. I know other people have brought up the "Alberta Calling" previous policy to attract people to Alberta, but here is another example from their actual election platform, promising . $1200 for new workers!
20.02.2026 13:23 β π 3 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0One of the things about D.Smith (and Alberta) that I'd really like people to understand is that the UCP campaigned for the last election as moderates, almost like the old Progressive Conservative party.

Ok, because of Danielle Smith, seeing some anti-Albertan posts in the wild. Friendly reminder that she received about 53% of the popular vote in an election with 60% voter turnout.

This is Danielle Smith pushing for separation without actually saying it. Most people don't pay attention to politics so she wants them to answer complex referendum questions based on vibes when they vote and she's ensuring those vibes are as negative as posdible.
