My son showed me his group chat. Kids were talking about their former history teacher getting fired yesterday for making online comments about Charlie Kirk. Free state of Florida is only free for some.

Was it a Publix? That's the big grocery store chain in our area and they still have baggers. They'll even ask to help you to your car.

As a teacher, making seating charts is hard. Even more so, when you realize a good number of students are squinting b/c they can't see the board, but parents can't afford glasses. Unfortunately, I only have so many front row seats. I can't be the only teacher who has this struggle?

Wow! That's a long streak. Impressive. I can barely make it a week.

This article was so interesting. Been thinking about these people all day because it reminds me of situation in my own family. Also made me think twice about that ramen in my pantry afterwards.

Sometimes when I'm ready to transition the class to a new activity, but I hear a student teaching a peer how to do a problem, I just wait. Because I know teaching someone else how to do something is one of the best ways to get the info into long term memory.

In Florida we were required to do virtual and in school at the same time during covid. It was crazy stressful, and I would not survive another round of that. But just doing virtual would be fine.

Lol, I would take that as a win. I do not understand this trend of districts making tests so difficult that most kids can't pass it. I don't even tell my students their real scores because it's too discouraging. Also frustrating to explain it to the parents.

Every time my students work on mini white boards, I have this one kid who draws really detailed outlines of states & countries. I think yesterday he drew Germany. Finally stopped to ask him, "you really like maps, don't you?" He confirmed. Best use I've ever seen of my white boards besides math.

Great gift! This is an awesome game! My kids love these cards when they were younger. I like how there are different ways to play with them too.

Yesterday all my students were fine. Today everyone was sick, sniffling, and asking to run to the bathroom to get a tissue. I really hope I make it to Christmas break without catching this!

I haven't been on Twitter for at least a few weeks. It was awful then, so I can't imagine how much worse it has gotten.

πŸ€” Challenge for #iteachmath teachers this week. πŸ€”

Make sure when you choose your "fun activities" for the week, that they are ALL related to math. There are plenty of things out there. Maybe we can share some of our mathy games and activities for this week.

Every year I have my 7th grade students draw and color a sierpinski triangle. It gives me something to put on the bulletin board when we come back from break.

This website looks very helpful! πŸ™‚ I've been handing out index cards with numbers 1-10 to form groups but trying to deal with kids that switch cards to be with their friends is frustrating. Would like to try some other way.

Today we did 2nd round of state (FL) testing. Found out this morning we did not have enough calculators for all the kids because they constantly destroy them. It was a mad scramble to figure out which teacher had extras to borrow (steal, lol). Wish I could stop spending my paycheck on calculators.

Per my request, two of my students made me a handwritten list of their favorite k-pop bands to listen to over the holiday break. Their top pick is Stray Kids and BTS didn't make the list.

Today my class had an impromptu discussion about George Washington's teeth. It wasn't in the lesson plan, because this is math class, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching the kids get into debating about their presidential facts. We eventually got back to linear equations.

"Wicked" was so absolutely amazing; the people in the movie theater clapped at the end! I would love to go back to see the 3D version.

I had to calm a student down in class the other day because he was freaking out that Trump was going to take away his citizenship. It started getting the other immigrant kids in class worked up. I told him it would be ok and that was unlikely to happen, but truth is I just don't know.

My small town in Florida had a man dressed up as Donald Trump walking in the Christmas parade this year. People cheered as he walked by. This is not normal!!!

Students were misbehaving in class, so one student asks me, "Miss, do you hate this class?" I said, "No, I like my job and if I didn't, I wouldn't be here right now." The students found this answer very interesting. Lots of conversation about my career options, lol.

Student: "If I'm good and do all my work today, can I have a piece of candy?"
Me: "Sorry, I can't, because I don't have enough for everyone."
Student: "No, but you'd just be giving it to me."
I laugh & walk away. (Side note: student's always good & does work, so I did want to give that candy.)

Florida schools were open during Covid, so I don't think it was that. I think a lot of it has to do with schools not retaining effective teachers and no longer emphasizing rote memorization. But I'm sure there's lots of contributing factors
