Just a quick update from the Twin Cities. (Please forgive the unsolicited message). THINGS ARE NOT BETTER IN MINNEAPOLIS. The media is mostly moving on, Trump is focused on other stuff, BUT NOTHING HAS CHANGED ON THE GROUND. More than 2,000 DHS thugs continue to roam the streets, abducting people 24/7, assaulting legal observers with impunity, and routinely denying 1st, 4th, and 5th amendment rights. Drones and helicopters are overhead every day. Hundreds and hundreds of terrified families have not left their homes since mid-December ... relying on the community to bring them food and help with rent and other necessities. (Those people are NOT violent drug cartel sex offending murderers, as DHS would tell you. Most are legal residents or citizens.) If anything, things have just become more stressful and intractable (think trench warfare as a suitable metaphor): The resistance is better organized and numerous, but DHS has become more clever and better at disguise... and the county sheriff's office is increasingly supporting them . Do not let anyone tell you that Homans (the new person in charge of the occupation) is making anything better. Do not let anyone tell you that 700 ICE agents leaving the city has made much of a difference; the remaining force (again, ~2,000) is still larger than the entire city's police force (which is legally unable to do anything). Please call your congressional reps ... especially if there is any chance the administration might listen to them.

The U.S. Virgin Islands always deserve transparency but especially when they're at the center of national news like the Epstein case.

We spoke to journalist @shirleysmithvi.bsky.social about her efforts to fix the territory's archaic public records laws.

One of the things I noticed is that she used other pen names to publish, almost as if she was trying to hide which books were written with AI.
Any book written by AI should be clearly labelled as such, and the reader allowed to decide.
I'm confident that given the choice readers will pick human.

I feel like there's *some* super classic story *somewhere* about a race where the fastest competitor doesn't end up winning because they're lazy and arrogant and have no technique.... I guess she'd have to actually engage with stories at some point to learn from that one, though.

Oh, and by the way? That whole "making six figures" thing?

I fully believe that she is earning six figures in revenue. I also suspect that has to burn a chunk of that on things like Amazon advertising and fake reviews just to get her pitiful 250 in sales.

'Who's going to win," she says after explaining that she can't even mention the pen names producing books because it will tank what pitiful sales she gets if people know she's using AI to produce them.

LOL. Hear yourself.

And the thing that will have the most value for me is that people will see my name and know that a human being worked on this book and did her best to make it the best, and most meaningful, book she could.

So what's gonna happen there? She's going to have to constantly cycle through pen name after pen name, regurgitating books in different formats, and she'll be joined by thousands of other content extruders all fighting over the same "we fooled you" dollars.

She's making six figures right now, but that's on hundreds of books. She's not making huge amounts of money on any one book. Mostly, she's just marketing shit barely well enough to fool people into thinking she has a real product, and then not getting them to stick around.
