Fighting Sexual Assault in the Military: A Q&A With Author Lynn Hall Commanders are the ones making decisions about how to handle sexual violence cases. If they don’t want to prosecute, then the case doesn’t go forward.

Also, there's a cursory touch on them in IM (though I don't love how they use & don't use them in ES, they do a somewhat ok job in MS, but not enough attention to how to annotate them effectively.

Bridges, the curriculum also uses them, but I think does a better job than IM.

I mean, I also use ratio tables but I don't know that I have any articles online about them... just in some of my live PD sessions.

@pwharris.bsky.social uses ratio tables really well & her site, mathisfigureoutable.com has some great examples too.

I do agree with the sentiment that it would be nice to prevent people who are abusive, reckless, and cruel from having and raising/traumatizing children. Given the historical oppression of mad & disabled folks (& connections to racism), comments like these are playing into that dominant view.

26.07.2025 17:28 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Piping in here to name: conflating abusive and mean with craziness & using sanity as a gatekeeper for parenthood is ableist. Mad pride & disability activists have been trying to end societal acceptance of ableism, especially as it leads to eugenics & nonconsensual sterilization of disabled people.

I wonder how many people *never figured out* that third-party food delivery apps majorly mark up menu prices, and thus assumed that food inflation under Biden was *way worse than it actually was* as a direct result.

Burnout is clinically understood as a combo of 6 factorsβ€”work overload, lack of control, insufficient rewards, breakdown in community, absence of fairness, & value conflictsβ€”and only a fraction of it is under your control. Burnout is a systemic problem, so be kind to yourself and hard on the system.

The author obviously does a better job at laying out the facts than I'm conveying here. Go read the book! It's by Aubrey Gordon. It's at your local library, I bet (I'm listening to the library audiobook).

Once again, the misuse of math to spur funding for research & approval of new weight loss drugs.

Once again, racism rearing its head in the presumption of whiteness (& averageness of white people) as ideals to strive for.

It is making me question so much about anti-fat bias & the lack of any nuance linking weight to health outcomes.

BMI is rooted is population level statistical analysis (of white men 200 years ago & then updated in 1950s), NOT actual predictors of health or useful probability calculations.

19.07.2025 19:00 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Why do I hate norm referenced anything? Because it compares people to others & assumes that being average is good for BMI with no nuanced understanding of health in comparison to weight.

I'm reading "You just need to lose weight, and 19 other myths about fat people" as part of my gym's book club.

19.07.2025 19:00 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Literally, BMI classified the 85th percentile & up as overweight & 95th as obese, and assumed the average was desirable. The average of western European men initially.

In 1998, the threshold shifted, pushing people who were "normal" into "overweight" without gaining any weight! Creating a crisis.

I already knew BMI was bunk. But I didn't realize it was norm referenced!

The rest of this thread will include my reactions to info about weight, weight loss & health. If this is not a safe/healthy topic for you to read about, skip this thread of mine.

This new policy basically means all immigrants have no due process rights and can be detained indefinitely. Once again like the student detentions and like CECOT, the Trump administration is using immigration detention, which both parties built up, as a testing ground for its authoritarianism...

The ClimateΒ Crisis Has a History. Teach It. Article. By Mimi Eisen and Ursula Wolfe-Rocca. 2023. A rationale for a new timeline of the climate crisis.

"These are our twin legacies β€” the systems that continue to threaten the Earth & the centuries-deep reservoir of resistance to them. Most of all, we want this timeline to confirm for students that the history of the climate crisis is still unfolding."

Finally: journalistically, this article left me frustrated. The writer sought quotes from politicians who have no understanding of educational research. They were speaking off the cuff based on their reactions to the idea of changing grading models. But their words carry weight. Troublesome. 6/end

The number one reason grade reform falters is communication, especially with parents. I hope this one can be turned around through town halls, digital communication, focus groups, etc., but it's going to be dicey. Districts need to bring parents in from the beginning in order to have a chance. 4/x

10.07.2025 19:00 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 1

The fact that school leaders were hearing this from the community so late in the game potentially points to the larger issue with the reform efforts--communication. Somehow the message was not being received by the groups that mattered and certainly not in a timely way. 3/x

Parents (primarily) and politicians seemed to learn about the efforts rather late and began to get upset about "lowering standards" and their concern for their children's futures. I cannot stress enough that this is always the case and should have been expected. 2/x

My read is it’s a semantics game…micro retirement, like regular retirement, is self-funded…vacation may imply paid time off, and we can’t have that now can we? 🫠

The hill I will die on is that everyone should get six weeks of paid vacation for a forty hour a week job, and commensurately more if they’re expected to work overtime.
