Raised wooden defences form a palisade between the cardinal and a small group of onlookers who are watching a nearby sea battle. Green waves churn while a ship burns in the distance.

Reading The Three Musketeers at the moment, and the scheming Cardinal Richelieu has made his first appearance. Looking for paintings of the real cardinal turned up this great history painting, Richelieu on the Sea Wall of La Rochelle (1881) by Henri-Paul Motte.
