#nzpol Remember this when it's time to vote because the next epidemic and/or pandemic will be sooner than you think.

good on Chris Hipkins for pointing out the absurdity of the govt handing out awards to businesses that resulted from NZ science funding, while also gutting NZ science funding

I'd like to see Labour, the Greens et al making more of a fuss about this every day, though

How Bad Will It Get? An honest answer.

Really, genuinely, honestly, if you are not in a good mental state, or at least resilient, do NOT chase this link

As a lifelong active pessimist, none of this is news to me, and I am fairly used to the anticipatory grief that it triggers, but I have a wife who shares this with me, and I have cows

He had his Waiheke place valued down to decrease rates. By 2027 he'll want it up again so less CGT - if he hasn't sold it first.

I heard NZ Labour Economics Spokesperson Barbara Edmonds on the radio today, giving the excuse that they can't tax wealth too much because it would cause rich people to leave the country (and somehow take their factories with them???)

Can it get the power back on faster for all those in Southland still without power? Can it put the poles back up and reconnect? Put the roofs back on? Clear up the debris?

Rules of the game
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon is attempting to run the nation using the wrong operating system. If he fails, it will be for structural reasons, not moral ones. The CEO’s structural mandate is efficiency: decisions are fast, metrics are quantitative, and accountability is limited to shareholders.

Democracy, on the other hand, is structurally designed to be inefficient and slow. With the latter, a prime minister’s primary job is not to eliminate resistance, by β€œfiring the electorate”, but to persuade, negotiate, and incorporate the disapproval of the populace.

So, what we’re actually seeing is a fairly predictable outcome: the political system proceeds with its own dynastic cycle, looking to replace a leader who fundamentally misunderstands the structural rules of the game.

Petition request
That the House of Representatives urge the Government to withdraw the Regulatory
Standards Bill from the legislative programme.
Petition reason
I am petitioning the House because nearly every submission on the Regulatory Standards Bill opposed it, yet the Government plans to pass it anyway. I believe this shows disregard for public participation and democratic integrity. I think the Government is ignoring the 98.7 percent of submitters who oppose the bill and cannot be trusted to listen. I feel that Parliament must act to restore public trust by urging the Government to withdraw this Bill.
