April 11 is my birthday, and I was in an upbeat mood. Spotify was concerned, calling my choice to listen to a couple of hours of trap music “a sharp left from your usual alternative metal” 😂

Spotify literally ranked me on a global list of top Staind listeners in 2025. Number 6277 in the world, top 0.2% listener. If I have my headphones in, I’m probably listening to Staind.

My Spotify recap is fairly predictable. Staind was also my favorite artist in 2024. Deftones released a fantastic album and climbed to two.

This semester I ran a class where we read recent papers in phylogenetics / systematics. I'd prepare an intro for each with background, then we'd dig in. I'd write a blog post after each as well. All the papers, slides and posts are now available at brianomeara.info/posts/phylop...

They’ve force integrated AI into every product they have and crow about how much people use it, which they use to justify forcing more integration. What a great feedback loop they’ve set up.

It blows my mind that we can visualize this.

Many of the undergrads and recent grads I work with are super pessimistic about the job market after they finish grad school. Will there be jobs when they finish a MS or PhD? Maybe. I think so. But things are very messy right now, and they don't want to commit years of life for an uncertain future.
