If you haven't seen Founder, it's very good, and is partially about this. It's mostly about Ray croc being The Devil, of which this is a significant part.

Yeah I'll admit he's a lot richer than I thought, just looked it up. Directors aren't usually that obscenely wealthy, he must have gotten a gross percentage on lotr or something.

How is it that none of these supposedly smart people understand how statistical modeling works?

Big paycheck is likely the answer. I don't exactly blame him.

another #fungifriday has arrived, here's these guys I found in the back yard this spring. Don't know what they are, they were growing out of mulch, so I suspect they arrived with it.

That's the shit that infuriates me the most when these people say this, ever since the advent of the digital camera (or even just videotape) it's been easy to make a movie with your friends. It's also a lot of fun. Hollywood's problem was never being unable to make infinite movies per year either.

All scenarios that don't involve being "forced" to work pretty much stopped existing the minute our population expanded beyond what could be supported by slash and burn horticulturalism/hunter-gathering. Doesn't mean we can't do a lot better than this though.

I know this is far from the important thing here but I will *never* add myself to yet another mailing list just to read an article. It's somehow more insulting than an actual paywall, but I'm seeing it constantly now.

Windows and leaves are super reflective also, which for your camera doesn't matter, but early night vision schemes were literally an IR camera and an IR flashlight, didn't work very well.

On that point I agree completely. Our system makes it nearly impossible to vote in someone who might actually change things, gerrymandering and citizens united essentially pulled the ladder up, and none of them will ever vote to reduce their own power and end their careers.

Unfortunate consequence of the sheer number of people on earth and the level of connectivity between them is that more or less every art form is in such huge supply that it's very difficult to be seen. Algo+AI hell isn't improving the situation either.

Anyway, I don't have time to keep going back and forth but I appreciate being able to have a conversation about this and not a weird internet shouting match.

A company that breaks even after taking care of it's people isn't paying less to make profit, and that describes a lot of small businesses. Profit is not necessary, and many owners are hands-on. Any system is only as good as the people in it if you ask me, there isn't one that will save us.

03.08.2025 17:39 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Hospitals don't have to be for profit. Nothing does. This is sort of what I'm saying, it's not that markets are evil, it's the eternal growth/greed is good mindset that offloads all your ethics onto "whatever the invisible hand does" that causes this stuff.

03.08.2025 17:37 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

It's just fundamentally icky that it works that way. Fwiw I've just gotten through a conversation having several Linux users describe an innocent (if major) mistake as a DDoS because it was spamming queries to a repo server. People just be calling things hostile cause it sounds better.

03.08.2025 13:40 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 5    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Also, you don't necessarily succeed by stepping on people. The doctors in question aren't stepping on anyone. Many businesses in this country are run by genuinely good people and they do fine. I work for one of them. Do you feel you're stepping on someone?

03.08.2025 13:31 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I don't think it has to be through the weird market system we currently have, but I think we're always gonna need special incentives for highly specialized essential roles.

03.08.2025 13:25 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Sure, but how do you know you'll have one at all if everyone just does what they love? Very few people *love* to do that, it's difficult, stressful, and operations can last a very, very long time. We'd immediately have a lot less of them if it weren't a way to buy a house at 28.

03.08.2025 13:24 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I agree virtually everyone (especially manual labor) should be paid more, but only some jobs can actually be made faster by hiring more people. My previous example of fieldhands is a good one, but writing software for example famously does not work this way.

03.08.2025 13:19 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I also think the gap between "people who want to be surgeons" and the number of surgeons we will need for an ever growing population don't match as well as you're hoping, but who knows. I think we can agree we'd rather live in a society that gives a sh*t about each other though.

03.08.2025 13:05 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I'm very skeptical of this, I don't think the profit motive is the only cause of long working hours, and that number seems highly unrealistic barring massive mechanization/automation, which would have to be built first, which is labor intensive.

03.08.2025 13:04 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Money is cool, "need money to not die" is very much not. Unless you wanna barter for stuff I guess, sounds like a real hassle though.

02.08.2025 16:45 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

We're a long way from not needing to work to survive, if we remove money from the equation then time is your currency. It may be that after your manual labor shift you don't have the energy to make anything for anyone, it may not, but it's hard to know.

02.08.2025 16:23 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I think you're right that everyone would like to have their needs met and do what they love, but I have to ask, are the surgeons and lawyers and plumbers and fieldhands also doing it for the love of the game? Do you imagine you'd have some other labor assigned to you or do you just make art?
